STD expert coming to JC (10/31/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have become a full-blown epidemic; an epidemic that is invading our teenage kids and young adults. National figures indicate that there were about 18.9 million new sexually transmitted infections cases in 2000 and nearly half occurred in young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Recent estimates from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) suggest that while representing 25 percent of the sexually active population, 15- to 24-year olds acquire nearly one-half of all new STDs. The Indiana State Department of Health data shows that from January through June 2006 of the 9,002 cases of STDs reported to the ISDH, an astounding 73.62 percent of the cases (or 6627 cases) affected our Indiana children and young adults ages 10 -24.

In 1960, doctors battled two commonly known STDs. Today, there are over 30 STD viruses and the number of strains and new STDs continues to grow. At least 15 million Americans this year will contract a new STD. Two thirds of them will be under 25 years old. One in five Americans over the age of 12 has genital herpes - a 500 percent increase since 1976. Recent studies show that teenage girls have a 46 percent chance of contracting HPV (Human Papillomavirus) at their first sexual encounter - a disease that is directly connected to 99.7 percent of cervical cancers. Clearly, this epidemic is wreaking havoc on our youth.

Dr. Margaret Meeker, a nationally known pediatrician and author, has lived on the front lines of this STD epidemic for more than 20 years as a pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine. Dr. Meeker now sees STDs affect 1/3 of her patients. In fact, Dr. Meeker has addressed the STD epidemic among teens in her book, "Epidemic: How Teen Sex Is Killing Our Kids."

On Wednesday, Dr. Meeker will address Jay County parents, health professionals, educators, and youth leaders about the growing epidemic of STDs among teens. Dr. Meeker's presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Jay County High School. The event is free and open to all interested persons, but seating is limited.

Then on Thursday, Meeker will address the students, teachers, and administrators of Jay County High, East Jay Middle School, and West Jay Middle School at 9:30 a.m. in the JCHS Gymnasium.

Dr. Meeker, has spent the past 20 years practicing pediatric and adolescent medicine and counseling teens and parents. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as the National Advisory Board of the Medical Institute. A graduate of Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Dr. Meeker completed her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in 1987. She subsequently taught medical students and physicians-in-training in Massachusetts at Baystate Medical Center of Tufts University.

Dr. Meeker has spoken nationally on teen health issues, including personal appearances on numerous nationally syndicated radio and television programs including Dr. Laura, The 700 Club, and The O'Reily Factor. Dr. Meeker also writes for Physician Magazine and was a contributor to The Complete Book of Baby and Child Care (Tyndale House Publishers).

The Pregnancy Care Center of Jay County is honored to sponsor Dr. Meeker's appearance. We cordially invite you to attend the community session on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Jay County High School Auditorium. For more information on this event or the monthly STD Clinic contact Patty Johnston at the Center 260-726-8636.

Respectfully submitted,

Justice?

To the editor:

Innocent until proven guilty.

That's a very good saying, but I don't believe it's true if you're sitting in the Jay Circuit Courtroom.

The Commercial Review reported in its felony court news on Oct. 4 that Jared Arbuckle has been sentenced to 10 years but would end up serving about five and a half years. They also stated that he had been ordered to pay restitution to McCormick (the charge he pleaded guilty to) and Wright's Sporting Goods.

What they did not say was Wright's Sporting Goods was part of the charges that were dismissed. I was amazed and appalled when the Judge ordered restitution of $4,000 on a charge that was dismissed.

Evidently, as long as you are guilty in the judge's mind, no guilty plea or verdict is necessary. My thought is this: If the judge could do this to this person, what would stop him from doing that to me or you? Innocent until proven guilty? Not in Jay Circuit Court.
