Steals key for Indians (01/05/2009)

ST. MARYS - Fort Recovery stole its victory Friday night.

It wasn't a close game - a 70-50 victory for the Tribe over the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders - but it was a game fueled by takeaways.

The Indians (5-2) recorded 18 steals and converted them to 31 points on the other end in the rout of Memorial. The Roughriders committed a crippling 26 turnovers on the night compared to Fort Recovery's nine.

The Tribe jumped out to a 20-13 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin with a big second period, outscouring the Roughriders 16-6 to go into the half with a 17 point lead, which they rode the rest of the way.

The Indians got a standout performance from senior Frank Thien, who came up with eight steals and dished out eight assists while adding eight points on the evening.

Greg Kahlig dropped 25 points in 23 minutes, shooting 7-of-14 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line to lead all scorers. Toby Metzger added 12 points, eight boards and five assists and Craig Tobe drained 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting as the Tribe's starters carried the load offensively.

Paul Carmean led the Roughriders with 14 points, 12 coming from behind the arc, while Derek Roop posted a double-double with 10 points and rebounds each.[[In-content Ad]]
