Stein among nation's best free-throw shooters (02/02/08)

Holly Stein isn't just the best free-throw shooter on her team. She's one of the best in the country.

Stein, a 2007 Fort Recovery High School graduate, has not missed a foul shot in the last six games for the Defiance College women's basketball team.

While her Yellow Jackets (6-11) have struggled to five straight defeats, the freshman has continued to display expert marksmanship from the line. She has missed just six times in 53 tries this year, and her 88.7 percent mark ranks her 12th in the country in Division III.

Most recently Stein, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in free-throw percentage, buried three free-throw tries in a 62-60 loss to Hanover Jan. 26 and two more Wednesday in an 80-77 loss to Bluffton. She has not missed from the line since going 3-for-4 at Mount St. Joseph on Jan. 5, a stretch that included a 7-of-7 effort against Transylvania.

Against Hanover, she added a 4-of-7 effort from the field as she finished with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal. She had two points, four rebounds and a steal in the loss to Bluffton.

For the season, Stein averages 10 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. She has 29 assists and 21 steals.

Dished out three assists for the Division II No. 11 Findlay University men's basketball team Jan. 26 in a 71-45 destruction Northern Michigan.

Niekamp also had a rebound for the Oilers, who are now 16-3 on the year.

Helped the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to a runner-up finish as hosts of the eight-team Engineer Invitational on Jan. 26.

Ian Thomas scored five points for Rose-Hulman, turning in a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. He was less than two seconds off the pace as he crossed the line in 9-minutes 9.17 seconds.

Mitchell, Ian's twin, finished 23rd in the mile at 4:43.09.

The Engineers finished with 122 points for second place behind Bethel (140).[[In-content Ad]]
