Stein and Vagedes take county titles (05/03/06)

FRHS track

COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery track teams won three championships Tuesday, including a pair from Holly Stein.

Matt Vagedes won the other and Vicki Roessner earned a top seed as the Indians competed in the first day of the Mercer County Meet at Coldwater. FRHS sits third out of five teams in the girls competition with 20 points, and last among the boys with 13.

Marion Local leads the girls with 29 points, and Parkway is first for the boys with 36. The host Cavaliers are second in both.

Competition will continue Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Stein successfully defended her shot put and discus titles, although not without a challenge. Her victory in the shot put came by less than a foot over Coldwater’s Brittany Klenke at 33 feet, eight inches. She tossed 107 feet, seven inches in the discus, missing her own school record by just five inches and winning by nearly four feet over Jessica Felver of Parkway.

Vagedes matched his own school record of 12 feet to take first in the pole vault. He was second in the event last season at the same height.

Roessner led the way in the 300-meter hurdle preliminaries by nearly a second over Marion Local’s Annette Bruns in 50.98 seconds. She was also third in the 100 hurdle preliminaries in 18.31.

The junior was seeded first in the 100 and second in the 300 in 2005 before finishing second in the finals of both events.

Tiff Gaerke placed third in the high jump at four feet, eight inches.

Fort Recovery’s boys added one more top-three finish in the 4x800 relay. Mitch Fullenkamp, Jim Roessner, Eric Lamm and Phil Gantenbein teamed for a time of 8:53.32.

The girls team in the 4x800, which had a second best time of 10:09.86, was disqualified. Marion Local won in 10:10.04.[[In-content Ad]]
