Stein breaks discus record (05/19/06)

FRHS track

MINSTER, Ohio — Coaches talk about peaking at the right time. Holly Stein has done it.

Stein broke her own school record in the discus Thursday, earning one of three regional berths for the Fort Recovery girls track team as the Indians competed at the Division III Minster district meet. Tiff Gaerke also qualified in the high jump, and the Tribe girls 4x800-meter relay team advanced as well.

Fort Recovery’s girls sat third with 16 points — tied with Parkway — after the opening day of competition. Minster was first among the 12 teams with 35, followed by Delphos St. John’s (17).

The Tribe boys were 10th out of 14 teams with six points. Waynesfield-Goshen is first with 31, and New Bremen (20) is in second.

The competition at Minster will continue Saturday at 11 a.m. The top four competitors in each event move on to next week’s Piqua regional.

Stein, a junior, had been within five inches of her record this year and broke through Thursday. She tossed 109 feet to break her mark by one foot and finish in the third place behind Shea Dietrich of Crestview and Jessica Felver of Parkway.

She set the school record at the Midwest Athletic Conference meet last season. The record before Stein shattered it was 101 feet, three inches by Barb Hull in 1991.

Gaerke secured her regional berth as she finished behind a pair of host Wildcats in the high jump. She cleared the bar at four feet, 10 inches, to tie with Rachel Jeffers of Upper Scioto Valley and Waynesfield-Goshen’s Meridith James.

Minster’s Ashley Meiring and Stacey Sudhoff each made it over at five feet, two inches.

Gaerke was also on the 4x800 relay qualifying team with Vicki Roessner, Tina Roessner and Mindy Vogel. They placed fourth behind Minster, New Bremen and Marion Local in a season-best time of 10-minutes, 2.24 seconds.

Matt Vagedes matched his school record in the boys pole vault, but fell just short of moving on to the regional round. His vault of 12 feet left him in fifth place.

The Fort Recovery boys 4x800 relay team — Mitch Fullenkamp, Eric Lamm, Jim Roessner and Phil Gantenbein — placed seventh in 8:55.79.

Vicki Roessner qualified fourth for Saturday’s finals of the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.68 seconds. She is seeded 12th in the 100 hurdles.

With five athletes already moving on to Piqua, the Indians have surpassed their 2005 effort. Only Stein and Vicki Roessner advanced last season.[[In-content Ad]]
