PIQUA, Ohio — Standing near the shot put area at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium last June, Holly Stein made a promise.

“I still have two years, and I’m going to be here next year,” the sophomore said after finishing 14th in the state shot put competition.

Now a junior, Stein cashed in on the promise Wednesday afternoon. She’ll be returning to Columbus, and she hopes to take a teammate with her.

Stein qualified for the state meet by finishing second in the shot put on the first day of competition at the Piqua regional. She will also compete for a state berth in the discus when competition at Piqua continues Friday — the top four in each event move on — and sophomore Mindy Vogel will try to advance in the 800-meter run finals.

Fort Recovery’s girls team scored 10 points overall and is in a third-place tie with Crestview and Anna. Minster leads with 23 points, and Versailles is second with 12.

The Indians did not have any competitors on the boys side, where Waynesfield-Goshen has the early lead with 28 points.

Stein had a slow start in the shot put, but was still seeded second going into the finals with her first toss of 35 feet, 101/4 inches.

“I definitely didn’t start out throwing my best,” said Stein. “I think that was just nerves and wanting to try so hard, and then when I relaxed I threw my 37.”

Stein needed that mark as she slipped from her No. 2 spot behind Crestview’s Shea Dietrich. Freshman Christine Borchers of Versailles launched the shot 36 feet, 31/2 inches on her fourth attempt, dropping Stein to third.

However, the junior came through on her next-to-last try, surging back ahead of Borchers with a throw of 37 feet, 1 inch. That toss held up for second place behind Dietrich, whose opening throw set a new regional record at 41 feet, 61/2 inches.

“After her first throw in the finals we pulled her aside and calmed her down a little bit,” said FRHS coach Jason Grieshop. “Good things started happening.”

Stein will return to Columbus to compete in the OHSAA State Track and Field Tournament Friday, June 2 at 3:30 p.m. She said she’s ready this time around, and won’t be intimidated by going up against the best in the state.

“It’s going to be better than last year,” said Stein. “Now I actually feel like I can contend for a spot. Making it to finals would be a goal to set.”

Fort Recovery’s 4x800 relay team of Tiff Gaerke, Vicki Roessner, Tina Roessner and Mindy Vogel also had a chance at a state berth Wednesday as they were seeded fifth.

Gaerke got off to a solid start, jumping to the lead spot in her alley. She fought off Russia’s Krista Meyer and finished her leg in third place behind Minster and Versailles.

The Indians continued to run strong, but could not hold on to a top-four spot as Minster, New Bremen, Versailles and Marion Local gave the Midwest Athletic Conference a top-four sweep. They still ran a season-best time by three seconds, breaking the 10-minute mark and placing seventh at 9-minutes, 59.44 seconds.

“We’re happy with them,” said Grieshop. “The kids are disappointed they’re not going to state, but they’re not really disappointed in their time. They put forth a great effort today.”

Vicki Roessner just missed qualifying for the finals in the 300 hurdles where she was seeded eighth. The top four runners from each heat advance to the finals, and Roessner placed a close fifth in her heat with a time of 49.81 seconds.

Xenia Christian’s Hannah Dell edged her for the final spot in 49.47.

“Some of these other kids improved just a little more today,” Grieshop said. “It was a good year for her. Hopefully next year she can get just a tad bit better and take that next step.”

The future looks bright for the Tribe as all five athletes — three juniors, a sophomore and a freshman — who qualified for the regional will return to the team next season. Fort Recovery had just two girls — Stein and Vicki Roessner — at the regional meet in 2005.

“Having all these athletes compete her is a great accomplishment,” said Grieshop. “If they all come back next year and they all compete and work hard, we’ve got an unbelievable chance to send every one of these kids to state ... We’re that close in all of these events.”[[In-content Ad]]
