Stein hits 1,000 (02/02/07)
FRHS girls basketball
FORT RECOVERY - Chalk it up as another classic Midwest Athletic Conference game.
It had all the elements: Two state-ranked teams, a game which came down to the last possession and an outstanding career achievement.
Fort Recovery's Holly Stein became just the sixth player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. But her Division IV No. 3 Indians fell just short in a 46-44 loss to the Division III No. 4 St. John's Blue Jays.
Stein entered the showdown for the MAC title with 994 points, and pushed past 1,000 with her 3-pointer with five seconds left in the first half. She finished the game with 13 for 1,007 in her career.
The senior trails Lynn Bihn (1,529), Valerie Gaerke (1,510), Sara Heitkamp (1,494) Liz Meiring (1,251) and Mandy Hastings (1,225) on the Tribe's all-time list.
Stein's triple forged the sixth tie of the opening half, and the game would deadlock again at 25 before the host Tribe (14-3, 5-2 MAC) surged ahead. Abby Niekamp's jumper followed by pairs of free throws from Stein and Sara Fortkamp gave the Indians a 31-25 lead.
But it was shot-lived, as St. John's (16-0, 7-0 MAC) went wild in the final three minutes of the period as they all but locked up the conference crown.
A free throw by Kim Miller at the 2:38 mark got the Blue Jays started, and Jeanne Bockey and Laura German each hit 3-pointers during an 11-0 run to close the quarter which gave the visitors the lead for good.
Fort Recovery got within one point twice in the fourth quarter as they tried to hand the Blue Jays their first defeat of the year, but St. John's always had an answer.
Brittany Pohlman scored 10 points to pace a balanced Blue Jay effort. German and Miller each added nine points.
Victoria Recker had six rebounds and three steals, and Miller added five boards.
Following Stein for the Indians was Niekamp with nine points. Tiff Gaerke grabbed 10 rebounds, Niekamp had six boards and Vicki Roessner totaled four assists.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery dropped the junior varsity game to the Blue Jays, 34-31.
The Indians (10-6) led 10-6 after the opening quarter and were still up by one at halftime. But St. John's pulled ahead by two after the third and went on to the win.
Lindsy Reindel led the Blue Jays to the win with 12 points and eight rebounds, both game highs. Rachel Miller followed with nine points, four assists and four steals.
Chelsey Leuthold scored eight points and had three steals for the Indians, and Kinsey Wenning followed with six points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Emily May grabbed five boards, and Nicole Pottkotter finished with five assists.[[In-content Ad]]
