Collegiate Check-up

The Defiance College women's basketball team is off to a 3-1 start thanks in part to the efforts of a Fort Recovery High School graduate.

Holly Stein scored in double figures in three of the first four games for the Yellow Jackets, who won their first three games before falling 79-57 to No. 3 Hope in the championship game of the Hope College Tip-Off Tournament.

The 2007 FRHS graduate had her best game in the season opener, scoring 18 points Sept. 15 as Defiance hammered Olivet 78-59. She shot 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-4 from long distance, and made all of her five free throws while added four rebounds, four steals and an assist.

In the Yellow Jackets semifinal win in the Tip-Off Classic over Alma, Stein recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also had two assists and a steal.

Stein had 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in the loss to Hope. She also totaled five points, six boards, two assists and two steals in a Nov. 18 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene.

For the season the sophomore is the No. 2 scorer on the team at 11.3 points per game. She is also second in rebounding (6.0 per game) and has eight steals and six assists while shooting 41 percent from 3-point range.

Tyler Rigby

Jay County - 2006

Was named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week following three consecutive 20-plus point performances.

Following a 26-point performance against Wesley, Rigby shot 9-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line Nov. 14 to lead his IU-East Red Wolves to a 79-58 victory over Lincoln Christian. He also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.

Against Kentucky Christian, Rigby buried three 3-pointers en route to a 22-point effort. He added six rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.

The sophomore totaled nine points, three assists and two rebounds Nov. 18 as IU-East fell 87-52 to Taylor.

So far this year, Rigby leads IU-East at 16.9 points per game. He is shooting 54 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range with 24 long balls in just nine games.

He averages 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Tiff Gaerke

Fort Recovery - 2007

Led the University of Dayton women's volleyball team in kills in the Big East Tournament championship match Sunday against St. Louis.

Gaerke racked up 13 kills in the title match only to have her Flyers fall 25-15, 27-25, 25-19 to the top-seeded host Billikens. She also had six digs in the defeat.

The sophomore also had 13 kills in Dayton's regular-season finale, which also was a loss to St. Louis. She totaled a career-high 12 digs to go along with one block and one assist.

Gaerke had 11 kills, four digs and one assist in a Nov. 14 win over Duquesne, and finished with seven kills, six digs and four blocks in the Flyers' three-game win over George Washington in the semifinal round of the Big East tournament.

She has 325 kills, 129 digs, 51 blocks, nine assists and five aces this season.

Jay County - 2005

Ran for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's cross country team Nov. 15 at the NCAA Division III Regional hosted by Otterbein.

Ian Thomas turned in the top time for the Engineers, finishing 60th overall in 26-minutes, 22 seconds. Rose-Hulman was 19th out of 34 teams.

His twin brother Mitchell was third on the team, placing 101st in the 240-runner field at 26:50.

Ian turned in his best time of the season at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at 25-minutes, 56 seconds. Mitchell's top effort came a week earlier at Wilmington in 26:43.

Alyssa Johnson

Jay County - 2006

Turned in the best time of her career Saturday competing for Taylor University at the NAIA Women's Cross Country Championships.

Johnson, who was the lone Trojan in competition, finished in 18-minutes, 41.2 seconds. She was 60th overall in the field of 327 runners in Kenosha, Wisc.

The junior also led Taylor to a sixth-place finish out of 20 teams a week earlier at the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship hosted by Cedarville University. She took 20th place at that event in 19:27.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Started at center for the Hanover College football team Nov. 15 in a 34-0 loss to Franklin.

Vormohr and the line allowed just one sack as quarterback Nick Sharp tossed for 240 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
