Stein leads Fort Recovery (01/28/05)

FRHS girls basketball

FORT RECOVERY — Holly Stein found the touch.

She had struggled from long distance for much of the year, but nailed 3-of-4 3-pointers Thursday. Those triples led her to an 18-point effort as the Fort Recovery girls basketball team stomped the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays 52-33.

Stein, a sophomore, hit 37 3-pointers and shot 42 percent from beyond the arc last season. She had made just 11 threes this year and was shooting 16 percent before the outburst against St. Johns.

As a result, the Blue Jays never had a chance.

Fort Recovery scored the first 11 points of the game, including five by Stein and four by fellow sophomore Vicki Roessner, using just 2:28 to do so. It shot 59 percent in the first half and 58 percent overall.

The Tribe (11-5, 5-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) managed just six points in the second quarter, but St. Johns still couldn’t mount a comeback.

Stein shot a sparkling 7-of-9 (78 percent) overall en route to her team-high total. She also had three steals.

Sophomore Tiff Gaerke also shot better than 50 percent from the field, hitting 5-of-7 for 10 points. She added two blocks.

Roessner more than tripled her assist average, finishing with a career-high 11. She also had five rebounds as the Tribe scored a 25-16 advantage on the glass and matched Stein’s three steals.

Krystal Rammel and Ciera Rammel shared the team-high as they also grabbed five rebounds each.

Jeanne Bockey had 13 points to lead St. Johns. Brittany Pohlman added six points, and Kim Miller grabbed seven rebounds.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery’s JV team pushed its mark to 13-3 overall and 5-2 in the MAC with a 48-41 victory over the Blue Jays.

The game was tied at the half, but the Indians put together a big third quarter. They outscored St. Johns 14-5 in the period for a 36-27 lead en route to the win.

Val Fortkamp paced the Tribe with 15 points, and Lauren Wenning added 11. Sam Staugler put in nine points, and Abby Niekamp followed with seven.

Wenning also had a team-best six assists and grabbed four rebounds. Jill Pottkotter notched a team-best seven boards, and Niekamp added four.[[In-content Ad]]
