Stein places fifth, three advance to finals (05/20/05)

MINSTER, Ohio — Holly Stein missed out on a trip to the regional meet Thursday night. But she will get another chance Saturday.

Stein placed fifth in the discus at the district meet at Minster Thursday, putting Fort Recovery in ninth place at the 12-team meet. Three other Indians — Vicki Roessner, Kristi Westgerdes and Eric Lamm — qualified for Saturday’s finals.

The top four athletes in each event advance to the regional meet.

Stein, who set a school record of 108 feet at last week’s Midwest Athletic Conference meet, had a top toss of 96 feet, four inches Thursday. That put her nearly two feet behind fourth-place finisher McGuffey Upper Scioto Valley’s Jamie Gayheart.

Shea Dietrich of Crestview won the event at 112 feet, eight inches.

Stein will get a second chance Saturday when she competes in the shot put. She was third in the shot at last season’s district meet, and narrowly missed a state berth by placing fifth at the regional.

Roessner, who was a regional qualifier in the 300-meter hurdles last season, will run in the finals of both hurdle events Saturday. She qualified seventh in both with a time of 18.46 seconds in the 100 hurdles and 53.02 in the 300 hurdles.

Westgerdes will also run in a pair of finals Saturday. She made it through in the 100 dash in 13.71 seconds and the 200 dash in 28.74 seconds.

Lamm was the lone qualifier from the boys team, making it to the finals of the 800 run with a time of 2:16.71.[[In-content Ad]]
