Stein rated No. 1 (05/22/07)
FRHS track
PIQUA, Ohio - After winning her first career district titles last week, Holly Stein looks primed to add top regional honors to her trophy case.
Stein, a Fort Recovery senior, is seeded first and second in the two events she'll be competing in at the Division III regional track meet Wednesday and Friday at Piqua. The top three competitors in each event advance to state competition.
Her district title toss of 38 feet, 91/4 inches, an Indian record, was the best of any of the athletes who will compete in the shot put. The next closest is Katie Gerhardt from Cedarville, who posted a distance of 37 feet 103/4 inches.
Stein will also compete in the discus after winning the district crown at 117 feet, 6 inches. She is the No. 2 seed in the event, trailing only Gerhardt (138 feet, 3 inches).
Fort Recovery sophomore Anne Koesters was the runner-up in the discus behind Stein at the Minster district, and also has a chance to advance to the state meet as the No. 4 seed in the event. She came in at 109 feet, 6 inches, but has two others close behind each at 109 feet, 2 inches.
A third Indian, Matt Vagedes, will also have an opportunity to advance in a field event.
The only Fort Recovery boy to earn a regional berth, Vagedes cleared the bar at 13 feet at the district meet and is the No. 2 seed behind Houston's B.J. Elliot (14 feet, 1 inch).
Junior Mindy Vogel, a state qualifier in the 800-meter run a year ago, will have some work to do in order to make a return trip to Columbus. She is the No. 8 seed in the 800 at 2-minutes, 24.95 seconds, and the top three seeds all ran district times of less that 2:20.
Vogel, who also reached the state cross country meet this year, will compete in the 1,600 run as well. She is the No. 11 seed at 5:36.50.
Tina Roessner, a sophomore, will be the No. 9 seed in the 3,200 run.
She placed fourth in district competition at 12:31.34.[[In-content Ad]]
