FORT RECOVERY — The competition is picking up.
With just two meets left before the Mercer County and Midwest Athletic Conference events, the Fort Recovery track teams got a taste of what those meets will be like Monday. The Indians hosted the St. Henry Redskins, the New Bremen Cardinals and the New Knoxville Rangers Monday, finishing third in both the girls and boys competitions.
Holly Stein and Vicki Roessner, both sophomores, accounted for four of the Tribe’s five wins on the day, all of which came in the girls events. Those victories kept the girls team in the hunt for first place for a while, but they finished third behind St. Henry (88) and New Bremen (79) with 55 points.
New Bremen won six events to St. Henry’s five, but the Redskins’ were first in three out of the four relays. New Knoxville was fourth with 29 points.
New Bremen won on the boys side with 124 points, followed by St. Henry (91), Fort Recovery (23) and New Knoxville (18).
“Definitely,” said FRHS coach Jessica Faller when asked if the meet showed a jump in the level of competition in comparison to the first several weeks of the season. “This is good for us, especially at home.”
The Tribe will host the Redskins, Cardinals, Rangers and the rest of the conference next month when the MAC meet comes to Fort Recovery.
Stein continued her dominance in the throwing events as she went mostly unchallenged in the discus and the shot put.
She won the shot by more than five feet with a toss of 33 feet, five inches. Her discus win came by exactly 12 feet as she recorded a launch of 97 feet, eight inches.
Roessner got a typically good start in the 100-meter hurdles and held off Sarah Sharp of New Bremen at the finish line. She won by one tenth of a second in 17.63 seconds.
She took the lead at the first turn of the 300 hurdles, pushing ahead by about 10 meters with 100 to go. She grabbed the win in 51.04 seconds.
The only other win for the Tribe came from Stefanie Schuessler, who gave the team a third field-event win by taking the high jump at four feet, 10 inches.
“Vicki did well in the hurdles, and Holly in the throwing events again,” said Faller. “Stephanie Schuessler won the high jump. We had some good showings.”
Senior Kristi Westgerdes had her unbeaten streak in the sprints broken when New Knoxville’s Gina Bambauer knocked her off by less than two tenths in the 100 dash. Bambauer crossed the line in 13.59, and Westgerdes finished in 13.78.
Westgerdes was also second in the long jump and third in the 200 dash, and Schuessler placed third in the 800 run.
Shawn Stein was the top performer for the boys team with a couple of third-place finishes.
He was just behind Chris Grant of New Bremen in the 100 dash in 12.37. Grant finished in 12.35.
Stein also took third in the 400- dash with a time of 55.8.
Freshman Eric Lamm followed Stein in fifth in the 400 dash, and was also fifth in the 800 run.
“Eric Lamm had a good day and Shawn Stein had a great 400 time again,” said Faller. “Those two are going to compete with these MAC teams.
“They work hard, and the competition is going to make them better.”
Adding top efforts in the field events for the Tribe boys were Stan Roessner and Rich Payne. Roessner took third in the high jump at five feet, six inches, and Payne was third in the pole vault at nine feet, six inches.[[In-content Ad]]
