Stein seventh in nation (03/08/08)

Collegiate Check-up

Holly Stein finished as one of the best free-throw shooters in the country, and then almost immediately turned her focus from accuracy to distance.

Stein, a 2007 Fort Recovery High School graduate, completed her freshman basketball season for the Defiance College women's team with a 7-for-7 foul-shooting effort Feb. 23. Just six days later she competed in the shot put for the Yellow Jacket women's track team, finishing second in a 21-thrower field as part of Ohio Northern's Friday Night Series.

She finished off the 2007-08 campaign in basketball as the No. 2 scorer in Defiance's 83-61 victory over Rose-Hulman.

She scored 11 points, including a 7-of-7 effort at the free-throw line, and also had four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Stein's effort in the finale boosted her free-throw percentage to 89.4 (84-of-94) for the season, which ranked her seventh in the nation in the NCAA's Division III. Junior Kim Rarick of DeSales led the country at 93.9 percent.

She finished the year averaging 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game to go along with 38 assists and 28 steals.

At Ohio Northern Feb. 29, the three-time state qualifier in the shot put tossed 38 feet, 6.25 inches to finish in second place.

Cara Roach of Tiffin edged her for the win at 38 feet, 9.5 inches.

Has at least one hit in each of the first five games this season for the Manchester College baseball team.

Williams opened the season with a pair of singles in a 4-2 loss Feb. 28 to Concordia and is hitting .304 thus far. The best game thus far for the senior came March 1 when he racked up a double, two runs, three RBIs and a stolen base in a 12-2 victory over Rivier.

He totaled two hits, a run and an RBI Feb. 29 in a 10-3 win over Alma, and notched singles in losses to Concordia and Wesley.

Josh Atkinson

Jay County - 2006

Tossed two scoreless innings for the Manchester College baseball team in its 4-2 loss Feb. 28 to Concordia.

Scott Bruggeman

Jay County - 2007

Bruggeman hit 2-of-3 from long distance and was No. 3 on the team with nine points. He also grabbed five rebounds in the defeat.

The freshman also had two points, two rebounds and an assists Feb. 27 as the Maple Leafs fell 83-68 to Grace in the opening round of the Mid-Central Conference tournament.

Tyler Sprunger

Bounced back from a difficult opening effort for two scoreless appearances on the mound for the Bluffton University baseball team.

Sprunger gave up two runs - one earned - and took the loss in his opening effort of the season, a 4-3 Beaver defeat against Eastern Mennonite. But he's been solid since.

The senior bounced back with a near-perfect inning in Monday's 18-9 win over Anna Maria, striking out three batters in one scoreless inning. He gave up one hit and one walk Thursday, but allowed no runs in two innings of work to pick up the save in a 7-3 win over Misericordia.

Tyler Niekamp

Scored two points for the NCAA Division II No. 6 Findlay men's basketball team March 1 as it rolled to an 87-64 victory over Mercyhurst in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

Niekamp, a fifth-year senior, hit his only field goal attempt of the game and also had an assist as the Oilers improved to 25-3. He also had four points, two steals, one rebound and one assist Feb. 23 in Findlay's 90-75 win over Ashland in the regular-season finale.
