FORT RECOVERY — Her first throw was nothing to get excited about. But her second was better than any Fort Recovery athlete had ever recorded.
Holly Stein shattered her own school discus record on her second throw with a toss of 108 feet even as the Indians hosted the first day of the Midwest Athletic Conference meet. She scored all but one of her team’s points as the Tribe girls were fifth after the first day with 21.
The Minster Wildcats hold the lead with 44 points, and the Versailles Tigers are second with 31.
Freshman Matt Vagedes scored the boys team’s only three points as it opened in 10th place. Versailles and New Bremen were tied for first with 41 points.
The meet will resume Friday at Fort Recovery at 4:30 p.m.
By the time Stein stepped into the circle for her first throw, she knew it would take a school record to win the MAC title. Minster’s Mindy Hackemoeller had already tossed the discus 103 feet, seven inches, which was six inches better than Stein’s previous record mark.
The sophomore’s first throw was unspectacular at best — it didn’t even reach 85 feet — but she more than made up for it the second time around. Stein’s second throw of the preliminary round of 108 feet surpassed her previous school record by nearly five feet.
She was able to simply let that mark stand, as no one got closer than Hackemoeller’s 103 feet, seven inches.
Stein had set the mark earlier this season at the Ansonia’s Tiger Relays with a toss of 103 feet, one inch. The record prior to this season was 101 feet, three inches, set by Barb Hull in 1991.
Stein went on to dominate the shot put as well to score another 10 points for the Indians. Her winning throw traveled 35 feet, four inches.
Chris Custer of Versailles was a distant second at 32 feet, 11 inches.
Seniors Kristi Westgerdes and Stefanie Schuessler split the other Tribe point as they shared eighth place in the high jump. They each cleared the bar at four feet, six inches.
Sophomore Vicki Roessner was the only Fort Recovery girl to reach the finals of a running event.
She qualified fifth for the 300-meter hurdles in 50.59 seconds, bettering her personal-best time by four hundredths. She was sixth in the 100 hurdle preliminaries in 17.98.
Westgerdes just missed scoring in the long jump where she was ninth at 13 feet, 11 inches. She barely missed out on the finals in both the 100 dash (10th, 13.63) and 200 dash (9th, 28.32).
Vagedes finished sixth in the pole vault at 11 feet for the boys team, which qualified for finals in two events. Shawn Stein was the No. 7 qualifier in the 400 dash in 54.87, and the Fort Recovery 4x400 relay team qualified sixth in 3-minutes, 41.45 seconds.
Stan Roessner fell just short of scoring points in the high jump. He was one of three athletes tied for ninth at five feet, six inches.[[In-content Ad]]
