FRHS track
MINSTER, Ohio - Although she is a three-time state qualifier, Holly Stein walked in to Thursday's meet without a district title to her name.
Now she can claim two.
The Fort Recovery senior broke her own school record in the shot put as she swept the throwing events on the first day of the Division III meet at Minster, leading the Indian girls track team to the top of the leader board heading into Saturday's finals.
Matt Vagedes gave the Tribe a third district crown by winning the pole vault.
With five events scored, the Fort Recovery girls squad's 37.5 points is best among the 14-team field. Marion Local sits second with 25 points, and New Bremen, Coldwater and Upper Scioto Valley are tied for third with 23.
The Indian boys are 10th out of 13 teams with 10 points. The host Wildcats lead with 40, and St. Henry is second with 24.5.
The top four finishers in each event advance to next weeks' regional meet at Piqua. The district competition will resume Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Stein brought her best in the first step toward earning a state medal to end her career, slaughtering her own school record in the shot put. She won the event by nearly one-and-one-half feet, launching the shot 38 feet, 91/4 inches.
Her previous mark was 38 feet, 11/2 inches, set at the 2006 Midwest Athletic Conference meet.
Stein fell less than two feet short of the school discus record she set at the 2006 regional meet, winning the district title at 117 feet, 6 inches. Her teammate Anne Koesters was eight feet back at 109 feet, 6 inches as the Tribe went one-two in the event.
After breaking his own school record in the pole vault at last week's Midwest Athletic Conference meet with a vault of 13 feet, 6 inches, Vagedes earned the district crown at 13 feet even.
Also scoring points for the Indians Thursday was the team of Sam Bihn, Amber Heitkamp, Tina Roessner and Mindy Vogel with a fifth place finish at 10-minutes, 23.9 seconds in the 4x800-meter relay and Beth Muhlenkamp with a sixth-place effort in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches.
Several Indians qualified for Saturday's finals, led by Vogel in the 800 run. She posted the No. 2 qualifying time at 2:29.22, second only to Alaina Morman (2:26.71) of Lafayette Allen.
Michael Trobridge (12.19) is seeded 13th in the 100 dash, Sylvia Schwieterman (19.14) is 15th in the 100 hurdles and Jessica Link (30.43) is 15th in the 200 dash.[[In-content Ad]]
