Area athletes had a banner day at their conference track and field meets April 25.

Holly Stein won a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships for the runner-up Defiance College women.

Ian and Mitchell Thomas helped lead Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to the HCAC men's title.

Alyssa Johnson of Taylor University broke an individual Mid-Central Conference record, and her sister Amanda Johnson helped break an MCC relay record.

Stein, one of five local graduates competing at the HCAC meet hosted by Rose-Hulman, left no doubt in her victories.

The 2007 Fort Recovery High School graduate, who was the HCAC women's field Athlete of the Year as a freshman, turned in a career-best toss of 130 feet, 1 inch to take first place in the discus. She was more than 10 feet in front of runner-up Rebecca Fehribach of Rose-Hulman.

Stein's other win came in the javelin, where she outdistanced the field by six feet with a throw of 117 feet, 8 inches. She was also the runner-up in the shot put, falling short of a third title by less than a foot at 39 feet, 2 ΒΌ inches.

Ian Thomas (Jay County - 2005) turned in one of the six runner-up efforts for the host Engineers, who also won five events.

He finished second behind conference champion Brandon Welti of Franklin in a time of 15-minutes, 55.32 seconds in the 5,000-meter run. He also turned in the third-place finish with a time of 33:05.37 in the 10,000 run.

Joseph Vormohr (Jay County - 2006) has his best finish in the discus, turning in a fourth-place effort for Hanover College at 138 feet, 7 inches. He was 13th in the hammer throw and the shot put with throws of 118 feet, 6 inches, and 38 feet, 9 inches respectively.

Mitchell Thomas, Ian's twin brother, placed sixth in the 10,000 run in 34:33.69. He was also 11th with a time of 16:43.46 in the 5,000 run.

Sarah Mescher (Jay County - 2008) joined Anderson University teammates Michelle Roth, Maggie Lucas and Michelle Rowlett for a time of 52.66 to place third in the 4x100 relay. She also teamed with Lucas, Candace DeLong and Dani Rufenacht for fourth in the 4x400 relay in 4:20.08, and placed 17th in the 400 dash at 1:08.5.

MCC Championships

Johnson dominated the Mid-Central Conference field in the 1,500-meter run to help lead her Taylor University team to a third-place finish. She was more than four seconds faster than runner-up Laura Harnish of Goshen, winning the event in 4-minutes, 42.86 seconds.

The 2006 Jay County graduate shattered the previous MCC record of 4:44.09 set in 2005.

Johnson barely missed a second title, falling just short in the 800 run. She was 0.51 seconds behind Lindsey Waggoner of Indiana Wesleyan to finish as the runner-up in 2:18.87.

She also teamed with Ashley Henry, Colleen Getz and Kirstin Hegelein for fifth in the 4x800 relay in 10:21.75.

Amanda Johnson (JCHS - 2008) ran the lead leg of the 4x800 relay for Indiana Wesleyan, which won the race by more than 15 seconds. She joined Waggoner, Kailee Whitaker and Cassidy Wagner for a first-place time of 9:21.58.

The previous record was 9:24.18, also set by Indiana Wesleyan in 2005.

In the 800 run, Amanda Johnson was less than a second behind her sister as she placed fourth in 2:19.61.

Jill Roughia (Jay County - 2005) had her best individual finish for Huntington University in the 3,000 steeplechase. She placed fourth in the event in 12:31.75.

Roughia also joined Michelle Kyler, Krystal McHenry and Lauren Davenport for fourth place in the 4x800 relay in 10:04.93. She was 10th in the 5,000 run in 20:55.52.

Amber Edmundson

Jay County - 2008

Came up big at the plate and on the rubber as the Ancilla College softball team halted a long losing streak.

Edmundson picked up her fourth win of the year for Ancilla (8-34), which had lost 24 straight, in an 18-4 victory Tuesday over Glen Oaks Community College. She went the distance, allowing just three earned runs.

She also had two hits in the victory.

The freshman also had a pair of hits in a double-header April 23 against Lake Michigan College.

Josh Atkinson

Jay County - 2006

Tossed seven solid innings April 25 for the Manchester College baseball team in a 28-8 victory over Mt. St. Joseph.

Atkinson went seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks. He struck out seven batters as he ran his record to 6-32.

He also pitched one-third of an inning April 24 in the Spartans' 15-13 loss to Mt. St. Joseph, allowing three runs - one earned - on three hits.

Thomas McCowan

Jay County - 2008

Recorded hits in each of his last two appearances for the IPFW baseball team.

McCowan singled to lead off the sixth inning April 24 against Centenary and advanced to second on Garrett Segraves' single. A walk loaded the bases, and McCowan scored when Jordan Kohler hit a grand slam to left field.

The freshman also smacked a single in the fourth inning of the Mastodons' 10-3 loss Wednesday to Ball State.

Josh Shatto

Jay County - 2006

Took the loss April 25 as the IPFW baseball team fell 15-9 to Centenary.

Shatto started and tossed two innings, giving up seven earned runs on five hits and four walks.

Josh Ludy

Jay County - 2008

Gave his ninth-ranked Baylor University baseball team a chance April 24 in a 4-2 loss to No. 13 Oklahoma.

Ludy entered the game as a pinch-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning and drew a walk to load the bases. However, he and the other runners were left stranded as the Sooners came up with a strikeout to end the game.

Frank Thien

Fort Recovery - 2009

Has committed to play football next season at Ohio Northern University.

Thien, who also played basketball and baseball for the Indians, earned all-district honors this year. He was also a first-team All-Midwest Athletic Conference selection at wide receiver and a second-team honoree at defensive back.[[In-content Ad]]
