Stories give a feeling of pride

Editorial

It’s hard to know which “feel good story” last Saturday night made us feel better.
It’s hard to top Kameron Woodbury as king of the Jay County High School prom. A special needs student and Jay-Randolph Developmental Services client, Kameron is one of those people who lights up a room.
Or, in this case, lights up a high school.
His smile, his warmth and his perpetual optimism touched his fellow students and everyone around him.
That’s hard to top.
But outside, as hundreds of Jay County residents arrived at the high school for the annual promenade, there was a nearly equal “feel good story.”
Bag by bag, can by can, the donations came for Helping Hand Food Bank.
For those of us from The Commercial Review who were on the receiving end — who were, after all, just playing the role of middleman between the donor and the charity — the experience was exhilarating.
More than once, we knew when we accepted items for the food bank that the donors had been in need themselves.
These were Jay County citizens who had known tough times and were stepping up to help others in tough times. To say that it was touching would be an understatement.
Several hundred items were delivered to the food bank on Monday, along with more than $250 in cash. The food came at a good time; shelves were becoming a little bare.
But, in the end, both “feel good” stories come together, don’t they?
Doesn’t it make you proud to live in a community where students are accepting and affirming and celebrating all of their classmates regardless of their challenges?
And doesn’t it make you proud to live in a community that provides an outpouring of generosity for those in need?
Of course it does. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
