FORT RECOVERY — Marie Osterholt’s team drove along smoothly through the first four innings of its game played in a blustery wind. Then they spun wildly out of control, but thanks to a great defensive play and some timely hitting got back on course for victory.
Seniors Kelsie Will and Renee Evers connected on a key double play in the top of the seventh inning, then scored the tying and winning runs on a Jodi Tobe double in the bottom of the frame as the Fort Recovery softball team edged the Russia Raiders 7-6 Friday.
“They did a super job,” said Osterholt of the pair. “That goes to senior leadership, I believe. I’m really proud of them.”
The Indians (1-1) gave away the lead thanks to four walks and a hit batsman in the top of the seventh inning, and still faced a bases-loaded, one-out situation trailing 6-5. Russia lead-off hitter Katie Drees hit a fly ball to left field for the second out, and Julie Simon tried to tag up and score from third.
But Will would have nothing of it, firing a strike to Evers, who had herself positioned in front of the plate. She grabbed the ball and reached back to tag Simon just before she reached home.
The same pair got the offense going in the bottom of the seventh, with Evers smacking a one-out single to center field. She stole second and third bases, and Will followed with a walk.
After Will advanced to second base, Tobe unloaded the game-winning hit — a two-run double to center.
Evers finished 3-for-4 with two runs, and Will was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
“What I liked was that we were very aggressive with the bat,” said Osterholt, whose team had 13 hits compared to just three for Russia. “That was our goal this week ... and they didn’t quit.”
Neither team did.
Russia (1-2) trailed 5-1 after four innings, but took advantage of 16 walks to get back in the game.
The Raiders drew three straight two-out walks and scored three runs in the fifth inning, then took the lead in the seventh. They stayed close despite going without a hit in the first three and final two innings.
“We didn’t hang our heads down ... we battled back and stayed in there,” said Russia coach Roger Hammonds. “Nothing was going our way and the kids just kept fighting hard and came back and took the lead.”
Fort Recovery got the win partially because it continuously caught Raider base-runners napping.
The Indians foiled a pair of sacrifice bunts, twice catching runners straying off second base.
The first came in the opening inning when Katie Dress drew a walk to open the game. Sarah Bensman put down a bunt and Tobe, the third baseman, tossed to second baseman Ciera Rammel, covering first, for the force out. Rammel then whipped the ball to shortstop Sandra Sudhoff at second to catch Drees for a double play.
Nearly the same situation played out in the fourth inning when Sarah Petty dropped down a bunt. This time first baseman Lauren Wenning made the play, tossing to Rammel at first. Again Rammel threw to Sudhoff at second, catching Simon off the bag.
And in the third inning the Raiders had the bases loaded with one out when Kinsey Wenning struck out Sam Goubeaux. Bensman, apparently thinking the inning was over, left third base and started toward the first-base dugout. By the time she realized there were only two outs it was too late. Wenning had the ball back from Evers, spun toward third and tossed to Tobe, who put on the tag to end the inning.
“Early in the game we had some really costly base-running mistakes,” said Hammonds. “When you get beat by one, those come back to haunt you. And we didn’t hit the cut-off a couple of times. That last play, if we hit the cut-off, we probably would have got her out pretty easy.”
Simon had two of the three hits for Russia.
The Indians got the bat on the ball a lot against Melissa Lachet, with Val Fortkamp, Lauren Wenning and Kinsey Wenning each with two hits to follow Evers and Will. Fortkamp had a triple, two runs and an RBI, and Wenning tripled and scored once.
Wenning got the win despite having just one one-two-three inning. She struck out three as five of the six runs scored against her were earned.
“Kinsey didn’t give up,” said Osterholt. “She didn’t get shook and she just kept battling.”[[In-content Ad]]
