GAS CITY - No streak can last forever.

In its history, Jay County High School held a perfect 14-0 record against Mississinewa. That count includes nine wins since the reincarnation of the rivalry in the 2003-04 season, and three sectional victories in the four years they were grouped together.

But Wednesday night belonged to the Class 3A No. 6 host Indians, who kept their perfect season in tact with a 53-37 triumph over Jay County to give coach Chanse Young his 100th career victory.

"Coach Teagle is, I think, one of the best around," said Young, whose team is 15-0. "Not too many guys probably have a winning record against him, and we definitely don't have a winning record. ...

"It's good to beat a quality opponent. Obviously they're a very good team."

The Indians, who lost back-to-back sectional title games to JCHS in 2006 and '07, led almost the entire way and were up 28-19 at halftime. The Patriots closed to within 28-24 on a Brock McFarland lay-up 1:30 into the second half, but they struggled for the rest of the quarter with senior Eric Homan already on the bench with three fouls.

Mississinewa put together a 9-0 run with seven of those points coming from 6-foot-7-inch center Josh Cook. JCHS (7-4) closed to within eight points in the fourth quarter, but a 9-0 run put the game away for the home team.

"We knew coming in it would be a real tough test," said Patriot coach Craig Teagle. "I felt we played like we did on Saturday night. We're not getting into spots, we're not screening people, we're not cutting hard, we're not hitting people when they're open, we missed a lot of shots around the basket ...

"Give credit to them. They did what they had to do. They've got all the weapons.

"There's a reason they're 15-0. They're a good basketball team."

Jay County had no answer for Cook, who was especially dominant inside when Homan was on the bench or could not guard him because of foul issues. He hit 10-of-13 field-goal attempts as he led all scorers with 23 points, and added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

"We really wanted to establish him," said Young, who also got 11 points from Kyle Barsha. "We really worked on Josh making a quick post move this week in practice. ... Fortunately he finished when he got it in close around the basket."

Homan gave the Indians fits as well as he finished 9-of-13 from the field and nearly matched Cook as he scored 21 points. He also had four rebounds and two blocks, but spent the final 6:59 of the third quarter on the bench.

"Homan was really good," said Young. "We just didn't have an answer for him. We couldn't stop him.

"It helped us offensively (when he went to the bench), but it also helped us defensively because he was making everything that he got around the basket. It was fortunate for us that we were able to get him in foul trouble."

While Mississinewa held just a 23-20 advantage on the glass, it repeatedly hurt the Patriots with offensive rebounds.

The Tribe's first hoop of the game came on an offensive board, and when point guard Chris Birky (seven points, five assists) was off the mark on his chance to make it a three-point play his teammates tracked down the miss. The ensuing possession turned into a Barsha 3-pointer from a Birky assist for a five-point play.

Cook added two other put-back hoops in the first half, and Mississinewa had two more offensive rebounds off of missed free throws.

"I think we gave up nine offensive boards," said Teagle. "Typically we just didn't block them out. ... That does not look like the same team that was playing for us three or four games ago.

"We're disappointed. I hope we're just in a funk, because we are not executing well at all right now, offensively or defensively. ..."

The only Patriot other than Homan to score more than two points was McFarland with nine.

The Patriots gave up a 20-3 run bridging halftime Wednesday in a 49-39 loss to Mississinewa.

Jay County led 17-10 with a couple of minutes left in the half, but was down 30-20 with 1:08 on the clock in the third quarter.

Drew Houck scored 24 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, for the Patriots as he buried five 3-pointers. Cade Price added eight points.

Collin Smith finished with 19 points for the Indians, who outscored JCHS 23-5 at the foul line. Andrew wilds added 10 points.[[In-content Ad]]
