Streetlight request considered (09/18/07)
Portland City Council
By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-
A city street may come out of the darkness.
A request to install a streetlight along Moody Street on the northwest side of Portland was heard by members of a local board Monday night.
Jeff Harker, street and park department superintendent, told members of the Portland City Council that a woman who lives on Moody Street, between Franklin Street and Ben Hawkins Avenue, requested the light.
Harker said he inspected the area during nighttime hours, and said a streetlight could be hung on one of the utility poles in the area, he said.
Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland, suggested that the council members look at the area at night and discuss the matter at a future council meeting.
In other business, council members voted on second and final reading to allow funds to be appropriated to purchase new computer software for Portland City Court.
Money in the clerk's record perpetuation fund will be used to buy $6,500 in software. The new software will be used to keep track of money received and dispersed through the court.
It would replace the current ledger books, which are more than 2 feet long.
Also Monday, council members:
•Met new Portland patrolman Ryan Moore.
The Berne native is the city's newest full-time police officer. He has served as a reserve officer for the Berne Police Department for more than two years.
Bob Sours, Portland police chief, said Moore will patrol with Sgt. Nathan Springer for eight weeks, then will work on his own.
•Learned that work on the new lift station along Industrial Park Drive is expected to be completed by the middle of October.
Hosier said there have been some minor delays with the relocation of the lift station. One of the delays is the fact that the controls for the new lift station were the wrong size, Hosier said. The new lift station is being built as part of the widening of Industrial Park Drive.
•Heard Hosier report that the Indiana Department of Transportation and Wal-Mart are still negotiating an agreement for the installation of a stoplight at Industrial Park Drive and Votaw Street. The parties are close to reaching an agreement, he said.
•Learned that the last city clean-up week of the year will be held Oct. 1-5.
All large items, such as appliances, brush and furniture, will be collected. No oil, tires or oil-based paints will be picked up. Appliances must have the Freon removed.

•Heard Hosier say that during his recent trip to Japan he meet with FCC officials for about an hour.
He said the officials gave many compliments about the FCC (Indiana) Inc. plant in Portland. The company is based in Japan.
Hosier, along with Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and other state, government and business officials went to Japan as part of a trade mission for the state of Indiana.
While there, Hosier served as a representative of Energize-East Central Indiana. He told council members that he will speak more about his trip at the next council meeting, which is set for Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
