Students say thanks

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
We would to thank all the participants in the parade who made homecoming such a wonderful experience. Homecoming was a huge success and we had a lot of school spirit and community spirit. It went very well and we are very happy. We would like to say a huge thank you to The Commercial Review, WPGW, Beyond the Gilded Willow, and the Jay County Fair Board.
Thank you,
Megan Taylor,

Thanks
To the editor:
We would like to thank everyone who helped Eldon when the tire blew out on his scooter and he had a wreck.
Portland Police, the fire department and JEMS were all there. People were very kind with help, with food and coming to the house to see if they could help.
We live in a small town, but when we were in need we had a lot of wonderful people to help us with cards, flowers, calls and prayers. God bless each and every one of you for your help — especially our family.

Arrogance?
To the editor:
I couldn’t believe the arrogance of Pitts’ latest column.
In talking about “the rest of us” he complains that diatribes of “the fringe elements of American political thought — right and, increasingly, left” have monopolized the airwaves. He then lists many of the conservative groups and ideas he has branded as radical and haters in his columns.

He then asks what about the “rest of us” who feel that living in a civilized society requires the ability to talk, compromise, and reason.” He surely can’t be talking about writers like himself who specialize in name calling, or Democrats who, having lost in the court of public opinion are conducting a political campaign based on vilifying the opposition instead of bragging about the bills they passed, many without even allowing the Republicans to participate in the writing process.
Finally he speaks of “We, the rest of us, the majority.”
Excuse me! Polls show that 71 percent of New Yorkers and 60 percent of Americans oppose the proposed location of the  mosque near the World Trade Center, 60 percent side with the Arizona (immigration) law, millions believe that cutting $500 billion dollars from Medicare will result in rationing, 55 percent of voters believe socialist is a reasonable description of Obama’s agenda, 36 percent believe Fox is the most trustworthy news source, and 7 percent of Democrats are birthers. It would seem that Pitts’ elitist “majority” is pretty small.

Concerned
To the editor:
We at the Internal Revenue Service are concerned because as many as 6,900 small community-based nonprofits in Indiana are in jeopardy of losing their tax-exempt status.
The loss of this tax-exempt status could greatly impact the organizations’ charitable work and their donors’ potential tax deductions.
Among the organizations that could lose their tax-exempt status are local sports associations and community support groups, volunteer fire and ambulance associations and their auxiliaries, social clubs, educational societies, veterans groups, church-affiliated groups, groups designed to assist those with special needs and a variety of others.
The organizations that are at risk failed to file the required returns for 2007, 2008 and 2009, according to IRS records.
The requirement to file is the result of a tax law change that occurred in 2006.
For many of these small organizations, complying with the new law may be as simple as completing a 10-minute form online. They can preserve their exempt status under a one-time relief program the IRS announced in July, but only if they file by Oct. 15, 2010.
The IRS has made numerous attempts to alert these organizations, but we are concerned that many may not have gotten the word.
A list of the organizations that were at-risk as of the end of July is posted at IRS.gov along with instructions on how to comply with the new law.
We encourage everyone who is connected with a small nonprofit com-munity group to make sure that their organization is aware of the law change and is in compliance before the October 15 deadline.
