Students thanked for help

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

A $100 grant from The Portland Foundation to each of the two third grade classes at Redkey Elementary School was the beginning of a special project by the students. The grant was to serve as seed money to encourage the students to select a project, raise additional money if possible and donate to that project.

The students of Mrs. Hoffman's and Mrs. Castle's third grade classes accepted this challenge, set goals and worked on raising additional funds. The result was increasing the $200 grant to $442.29, more than doubling the challenge grant. The students as part of their project visited the Museum of the Soldier in Portland, Indiana to learn more about the veterans in Jay County.

Museum staff members, Dr. Gene Gillum and Matt Simmons gave the students a tour of the exhibits and answered questions about the museum and about the veteran's featured in the exhibits. The students selected the Museum of the Soldier to be the recipient of their grant challenge.

On Tuesday June 15, the two third grade classes presented a check for $442.29 to Dr. Gillum during the end of school ceremonies.

The Museum of the Soldier wants to express a great big "thank you" to all the third grade students for their hard work and for their support of the veterans of Jay County. The money will be applied to the fund to pay for the Museum's new roof. A special recognition plaque along with their class pictures will be on display in the museum.

In closing, the third grade students and their teachers are a credit to themselves and their community and are to be complemented for a job well done. In addition, The Portland Foundation is to be complemented for giving a great learning incentive to our community's young people.

Sincerely,

Jim Waechter, Gene Gillum MD, Matt Simmons, Nathan Keever, Mike McBride, Brian Williamson, Debra Price and Art Hall - Board of Directors, Museum of the Soldier

Pray today

To the editor:

God still answers prayer today. Lee Fisher, co-founder of the Portland Tabernacle, wrote the song, "He's the Christ of every crisis, He is just the same today; He will solve your every problem if you only let Him have His way." 2 Chronicles 7:15 reveals that same truth. God still answers prayer. Moses prayed for the Shikinah to go with Israel as they journeyed to Canaan. Joshua prayed 14 words and God made the "sun stand still." (Joshua 10:12). Hannah prayed for a son. Solomon for wisdom. Jabez asked that his borders be enlarged. Nehemiah, while trying to get Jerusalem back up on its feet, asked God nine different times for help. Daniel stood before God needing revelation.

No man or woman is greater than his or her prayer life.

Jesus was caught praying to His Father by his disciples and they asked him to show them (or teach them) how to pray.

The early church was born out of prayer. Jesus told the disciples to "tarry in Jerusalem until they be endued with power from on high." Then, on the day of Pentecost, the Spirit descended upon them in sanctifying power. Why? Because they prayed. They knew they would receive nothing from God except through prevailing prayer. Acts 6:4 says they "gave themselves continually to prayer."

Prayer will keep you from sinning or sinning will keep you from praying. The people who are not praying are straying. Of all the 100 churches in Jayland, I wonder how many people spend an hour in prayer each day? A recent Gallup poll showed the average pastor only spends five minutes a day in prayer. No wonder some preacher's sermons are dead, dry and boring. No wonder some churches are struggling and closing. No wonder some church members are starving. And if your pastor needs some fresh fire, why not start praying for him or her? Encourage them. Slip them a blueberry pie next Sunday.

And on the flip side of the coin, God's problem has never been with liberalism, communism or modernism. His problem has been with "dead" church members. They are sometimes fruitless, juiceless and useless.

When one prays to Jehovah, he wants to go to church, testify, give offerings and help the poor. When one prays to God his attitude changes in the home. He is easy to live with.

God still hears and answers prayer today. Don't give up. Start praying for your son or daughter that may be in trouble. Don't give up. You are on the brink of a miracle.

Just because you're a member of the First Church of the Deep Freeze doesn't impress the Lord. Elijah was a man "subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed." Are you taking the time each day to pray? Are you willing to pray and fast for a great revival in our area?

The only power that God yields to is the power of prayer.

To draw the brooding Holy Spirit to you, to your church and to Jayland, it will take more than a Bible study, a gospel sing or another series of meetings. He will respond to prayer. The prayer of repentance; the prayer of confession.

"Got any rivers you think are uncrossable?

"Got any mountains you cannot tunnel through?

"God specializes in things thought impossible

And He can do what no other power can do."

The secret of praying is praying in secret. We've tried everything else, why not try prayer? How can God help you if you don't talk to him?
