Support encouraging for humane society (03/05/2009)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

To quote Gomer Pyle: "Surprise, surprise, surprise."

This eye-opener was revealed at the Jay County Humane Society Shelter Board Meeting held at the local library.

It was our first meeting and my wife and I expected to find a tiny group of concerned citizens armed with a couple dozen tales of dog and cat rescues. But, to our astonishment we found a room over-flowing with warm and enthusiastic animal lovers. We quickly learned this impressively formed organization had bestowed birth to some very aggressive future plans. Yet, even more extraordinary was their remarkable history of achievement.

During the previous 36 months nearly 1000 animals have been taken in by this Shadeland Avenue shelter. Each fed, nursed, sprayed or neutered and placed in caring homes. Their success rate for relocating these future pets is 97 percent. Truly astounding!

So fair citizens of Jay, please remember the next time "Puff" sits purring on your lap and "Spot" has his tail imitating a windshield wiper, please, give awareness, understanding and support to our local shelter. Don't let them down.

Honorable sendoff

To the editor:

This past Tuesday morning (Feb. 24) I took a call from the son of the late Hubert "Cap" Arbuckle announcing what we all knew had been coming for quite some time.

His father had passed on, and he had requested that a Military Graveside Honor Guard Ceremony be performed. For many years Cap had taken us around to our Memorial Day Ceremonies on the old Diamond Reo Fire truck, to the various services we perform every year in and around Redkey.

It was agreed that there would be a concerted effort to make this turn out well for him.

In recent months a letter printed here was rather critical of a local Honor Guard Unit. I feel compelled to thank the same group for an exceptionally well done performance for Cap.

Due to circumstances well beyond the Funeral Director's control, there was a rather substantial delay in starting Cap's service. I went ahead of the procession to the graveside, and the guys from the Union City and Ridgeville unit were faithfully waiting there well over an hour after they had been told to be there.

The size of the procession, and the fact that two faithful fire-fighter friends drove Cap out on the old open cab Diamond Reo Fire Truck, added substantially to the wait. To sum it up, if there was a problem at the service referred to in the letter a few months ago, this same group of guys redeemed themselves well above and beyond the call of duty for Cap.

It was an honor to serve with them, and I am proud to have been a small part of the service at the request of the family. I considered Cap a good friend, and it just will not be the same not having Cap around to take us to our Memorial Day services on the old Diamond Reo.

Sincerest thanks to the crew from Ridgeville and Union City who did an exemplary job, and especially to Gary DeVoss and Randy Young who drove Cap to his final resting place in the old Diamond Reo on a very cold wintry day in an open cab truck with no heat.

Cap would have been proud of all of you, as am I. It was indeed an honor to serve with you to give a great man a fitting sendoff.

Respectfully submitted,

James D. Fulks III,

Big thanks

To the editor:

We would like to say a big thank you to the Jay County Highway Department employees for the extra help they gave to us. Let me explain. Our son is on peritoneal dialysis. He had gone to work, but by the time he started home the roads had drifted almost closed. So he called to ask if someone could plow our road so he could get home.

In this time of cutbacks and government offices not being able to help, our highway department was there to help us. They sent a truck to plow our road and he went above and beyond by plowing to the highway.

Without their help, our son would not have made it home to do his dialysis. So a very big thank you to our county highway department. We are so very lucky to live in a community that cares for its citizens.

Thank you so very much. We appreciate all you do.
