Support for teams urged (10/18/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor,

During the regional boys soccer game at Blackford High School Wednesday evening there were some accusations made about the character of our fans. The administration of Jay County High School is pleased with the way the soccer team and coaches conducted themselves. To the best of our knowledge, our fans did not appear to have anything to do with the conflict that took place at the end of the game.

As we prepare for a historical day on Saturday, we need to rally behind our student athletes.

We have the opportunity to bring two regional championships to Jay County High School, in girls cross country and boys soccer. We need to overwhelm our hosts with a sea of blue so large they will be in awe of the support we are giving our teams. This is the great spirit Jay County fans have.

If you are over by Muncie at 10 a.m., stop in at The Water Bowl and cheer on the Jay County cross country runners as they participate in the regional meet.

The boys soccer team will be participating in the soccer regional championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blackford High School. This team is making school history by participating in the regional championship game for the first time.

We are proud of all our athletes for their hard work, dedication and accomplishments this season.

Proud to be a Patriot!

Phil Ford, principal, and Ted Habegger, athletics director, Jay County High School

Supposing

To the editor:

Mr. Jack Ronald supposed (Oct. 6), among other supposings, that the possible reason Jay County voters may not vote for Barack Obama are "Some of that is cultural. Some of it is generational. Some of it is habit. Some of it is bigotry."

Cultural, as in cultural diversity or cultural heritage or cultural values or cultural awareness.

Generational, as in all of the offspring that are at the same stage of descent from a common ancestor.

Habit, as in the automatic routines of behavior that are repeated regularly, without thinking. They are learned, not instinctive, human behaviors that occur automatically, without the explicit contemporaneous intention of the person. ...

Bigotry, as an obtuse or narrow-minded intolerance, especially of other races or religions.

Well I say we are guilty as "supposed" of all these supposings.

You may be asking yourself, why are we guilty? Well, here's why Jack is right on.

Local newspaper has no black employees, local radio station has no black employees, local schools have no black teachers, local school board has no black members, local political offices are not held by any black officials, no local black ministers, no local black physicians, no local black businesses.

The only chromatic diversities to be found in Jay County are these: Stoplights are red, green and yellow, most of the paved streets and roads are black and all of the sky is blue.

Absurdity, as in ridiculously incongruous or unreasonable "supposing," or as in this letter to the editor.

As for me the reason I am not voting for Barack Obama is not that he is black. I am not voting against Barack Obama, I am voting for John McCain and not because he is white.

Both men have their unique virtues and both have their unique faults.

Both are running to be the next President of the United States who will reside, for the next four years, in a White House!

Hey don't start yelling at me over the "White House" statement. I didn't choose the color. It's always been white. Stupid bigoted forefathers and foremothers (had to add that to be contemporarily politically correct, so damned important these days) chose the color!

So then the conclusion I have finally come to is that if you feel the necessity to assuage your inherited guilt, concerning your racial surroundings in Jay County, please cleanse and rehabilitate your souls and disregarding any differences of substantive policy positions of either candidate "Vote for the Black Dude."

Oh and by the way that nonsense about all the "local black unemployment", don't even think about it because it's the way it is. It's just our local "white affirmative action" and that's OK isn't it?

I mean its only words and ideas and long standing local practices, isn't it?

Please vote

To the editor:

I have read that one definition of mental illness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Please vote on November 4th.
