Support needed for animal shelter (04/20/07)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

For those of you who are not familiar with the Jay County Humane Society, it is a not-for-profit, no-kill shelter. There are so many animals that need homes for several reasons: They are dumped, abused, or the owners find themselves unable to keep the pet due to a financial situation, location, lack of time, or the animal just does not blend in with the owner or the owner's family.

Besides taking animals into the shelter, they also serve as a go-between for people needing to find a home for a pet and those looking for a pet. Thanks to donations of food, the shelter is able to help people who, because of financial problems, need help feeding their animals.

There are several ways the public can help the humane society give better care to the animals. They accept donations of aluminum cans for recycling, and there is a drop-off box in front of the shelter for you to deposit the cans in.

They also recycle used toner and print cartridges for $1 to $10 each, depending on the cartridge, and these can also be dropped off at the shelter.

They accept donations of food, blankets, leads, collars, and anything else needed to care for the animals. There are donation boxes in several businesses that you can put your spare change into after making your purchases.

For $5 annually, you can become a member. For $15, you can become a supporting member. For $50 you can become a donor and a member of the Second Chance program.

An acknowledgment and a small message of your choice will be posted on the cage for six months.

You will receive an update at the end of the six months of some of the animals that were cared for in your sponsored cage. You also have the choice of requesting that your donation go towards the spaying and neutering of the animals.

If you are unable to help financially, the donation of your time would be greatly appreciated, as there is always something that needs to be done at the shelter - from spending time socializing with the animals to cleaning.

And the most important way you can help the shelter is to have your pet spayed or neutered. A sterilized animal has a much improved chance for a longer life, with fewer behavior and health problems.

The Herman Bennett Foundation is just one site on the Internet that can be accessed for more information about the benefits of sterilizing your pet. If you don't have access to the Internet, call the shelter for more information.

Millions of animals are put down each year because homes cannot be found for them - animals that could have brought so much love to a family. Annie, our beagle, came from the shelter.

After 11 years we had to put her down, and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. I wouldn't let her die alone, so I held her until the end and cried at the loss of a friend.

Adopt an animal from the shelter and enrich your life.

He/she will give you unconditional love.

Thank you,

Sharon Van Steenis
