Support the Portland Rockets

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I am Mickey Pensinger, daughter of Ray Miller, long-time patriarch of the Portland Rockets and sister of Randy Miller, current coach and manager of the Rockets.

I was at the latest chamber of commerce luncheon and the speaker was Gyneth Augsburger, with the tourism bureau. She and her group gave a good talk on what Jay County and Portland has to offer.

Her talk got me to thinking. Portland has no bigger supporter than my dad and brother (who lives in Geneva), especially when it comes to the Portland Rockets. You surely remember my dad doing the Rocket Report on the radio (thanks to Rob Weaver, Mike’s Rent-All, Baldauf Garage, the Ray Miller Co. and others). Well, now Randy does it and does a fine job. I think Randy and dad are working with the radio station on doing a few of the Rockets games on the air.

The Rockets have more than the usual number of Portland/Jay County guys currently on the team — Pete Byrum, Josh Jellison, Mitch Waters and if I forgot anyone else, sorry. There are several guys from the western side of Ohio that come to play for Portland. They all have a great following and listen to the radio in the morning in case they miss a game.

We sent schedules to Ray Cooney at The Commercial Review almost a week in advance of opening day (usually we aren’t that prompt) for publication. We wanted a good turnout. We had Mayor Hosier throwing out the first pitch and everything. My daughter Jenny took some pictures. Hopefully they will turn out and we can submit them to the paper. By the way, the Rockets got beat the first game that day and rained out the second. Tuesday the 25th they beat LaMargarita in Fort Wayne and were rained out Thursday the 27th.

Display Craft printed up 10 schedules (thanks Amanda and the gang) and my brother Brad and I have placed them around town in merchant’s windows. So go to Beck’s Hair-Em, Hunt’s Emporium, MainSource Bank, Progressive Office Supply, Pit’s Cocktail Lounge, city hall, Northside Carryout, LoBill Foods, True Value and Southside Carryout. Stop at their windows and check out the schedule, mark your calendars and come to beautiful Runkle-Miller Field (temporarily under construction).

Gary and I have Rocket T-shirts, Rocket fitted ball caps, and pretty darn good popcorn and hot dogs in the concession stand. Look for my dad in the golf cart and stop him (if you can) and say hi. The Ray Miller clan has spent many years at Runkle-Miller Field, each of us with different roles to play and sacrifices have been made by us all (mom too) to make that place nice — a “Field of Dreams,” Randy calls it. Support your Portland Rockets! See you at the ball park.

You can’t beat fun for a good time.
