Support urged for Liggett (10/12/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

The Nov. 2 election day is fast approaching, and it is time to decide who best represents Jay County residents for District 33 State Representative. We have been very fortunate to already have the best person for this position already serving District 33 in Ron Liggett. I wish I could list every funding project that Ron Liggett has brought to Jay County in this letter, but there would not be enough space. Instead, let me just highlight many of the reasons why Ron Liggett should be re-elected District 33 State Representatives.

If you have ever been to the Jay County Fairgrounds, and seen the improvements made over the years, you can thank Ron Liggett for $150,000. If you live in Portland, Bryant, Redkey, Dunkirk, Pennville or Salamonia and you have seen improvements in fire departments, community centers, city buildings, wastewater treatment plants or other projects, again you can thank Ron Liggett for several hundred thousand dollars in funds for these projects.

Let us not forget when the Jay School Corporation was deep in the red for more than $1 million and did not have enough money to even operate on, Ron Liggett went to work for us and succeeded in securing a $1 million loan at no interest to help Jay Schools continue providing education for our children. If you remember the drastic options that the school board would have had to make, then you will thank Ron Liggett for being there for us.

But there is still much more to thank Ron Liggett for. He was able to get $1 million in funds to help keep St. Gobain glass company in Dunkirk, and save a lot of good-paying jobs. I know of many small businesses and industries that he has helped in a variety of ways whether it be funding, getting through all the red tape in bureaucracy, or problems that need to be resolved. He has helped save many of Indiana’s WorkOne offices, local Bureau of Motor Vehicle offices, and the Indiana State Police posts from closing.

Finally, there is the best reason of all for re-electing Ron Liggett. He has always been just like one of us, the average hard-workng Jay County resident and taxpayer. There is nothing phony about Ron Liggett, and he does not make the typical politician’s pie-in-the-sky promises to get elected. As chairman of the House Labor and Employment Committee, he has fought for and helped get legislation passed for higher wages, better benefits and higher safety standards for Hoosier workers. If you have been one of those unfortunate workers that has been on worker’s compensation, the program is much better than it used to be because of the efforts of Ron Liggett.

Well, I could go on, but the point is we already have a District 33 State Representative that has a record of achievement for all of East Central Indiana that has earned him the right to be re-elected on Nov. 2. Do the right thing and vote for the person who has been there time and time again for all of us: Ron Liggett.
