Support urged for Whitacre event
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
To the factories of Portland.
I’m a factory worker. Been one since 1973. I worked at Jay Garment, Sheller-Globe, Createc, Horizon Mobile Homes, 4-M, Jay Products and FCC. My father worked at Sheller-Globe for 47 years.
I met and became good friends with a lot of people. I played on many factory softball teams, went to lots of company picnics, company Christmas parties and had many Thanksgiving dinners with good friends.
But let me tell you about a man who didn’t get to enjoy those things; who didn’t get to work beside some of his close friends or high school buddies or enjoy a beer with them after work.
For this man chose to work for a different company — a company of Marines. This man gave the ultimate sacrifice for that company and the country that he loved, served and protected.
I ask the factories to step up and make a donation to the Lance Cpl. Andrew F. Whitacre Memorial Fund to honor him and honor his parents who live on with the memory of their son and the sacrifice he gave for us and his country.
I also ask that these factories ask their workers to step up also. Working in factories all my life has given me many things and a good life.
Let’s all give back for that freedom and for the price many servicemen and women have given.
One hundred percent of all donations go to support our troops, USO and Wounded Warriors. Please come out to our Memorial Ride on Saturday at the Portland Moose Lodge.
Come and see the bikes leave at noon with a police escort. The public can return from 4:30 to 6 p.m. for food. The cost is $5 per person, with an auction beginning at 6 p.m.
I promise you will meet some good people. Say hi to Andrew’s parents, Ernie and Norma. You will leave with a tear in your eye, a smile on your face, love in your heart and a blessing from God that will last forever.
I thank you all for taking time to read this. May our freedom last forever as our memory for Andrew does. Also, God bless you all and our servicemen and women.
For more information or to arrange for a donation, call me at (260) 729-2575 or (260) 251-1737.
Thank you.
