Surveyor is selling backhoe

Jay County Commissioners

The county surveyor is hoping to recoup some money by selling an old backhoe that isn't being used by the department.

Jay County surveyor Brad Daniels asked the commissioners for approval to attempt to sell a department backhoe at auction and put any money made into his backhoe replacement fund for future purchases.

Daniels said the backhoe is at least 25 years old and is in good condition, but isn't in use by the department. The backhoe also has controls that are reversed from the department's more modern machines, making it more difficult for workers to use.

"It would be worth more at auction," Daniels said, opposed to trade in.

Daniels suggested adding it to the roster of an equipment auction, where buyers would be looking for that type of machinery.

An Indiana State Board of Accounts representative who happened to be in the Jay County Auditor's office this morning said the money that would be earned through the sale could be put in the surveyor's backhoe replacement fund for future use.

"I didn't see any problem with it," said commissioner Jim Zimmerman of the plan.

The commissioners told Daniels to go forward with the plan.

In other business this morning, the commissioners:

•Agreed to a five-year service contract with Barracuda, which provides spam filtering and firewall services for the courthouse. The contract includes software replacement at a cost of $1,599 and instant replacement at a cost of $1,399 for the five years.

The commissioners saved $33 a year compared to a three-year plan and $150 per year against a one-year contract.

•Approved wording on a memorandum for the Jay County Health Department to use when residents request county assistance for replacement of a septic system. The memo outlines that the program is for replacement of failing systems only and not for new construction and that the applicant must own the property.

•Were informed by Jay County auditor Nancy Culy that the courthouse's e-mail server will likely need to be replaced by the end of the year.

Culy estimated such a replacement may cost about $13,000.

•Signed an inter-local agreement with the Indiana Department of Transportation Greenfield District to perform bridge inspections on Bridge 54 near Bloomfield Elementary School.

•Gave approval to county engineer Dan Watson to take care of preliminary design work for replacement of Bridge 62 located on county road 850 East between 300 and 400 North. Watson said the project will likely be bid later this year for construction in 2011.

•Accepted all annual asphalt bids received upon the suggestion of Watson.

•Were informed by Watson that the highway department is in need of a copier at an estimated cost of $4,000. The commissioner made Watson purchasing agent to buy the copier, but he will need to approach the Jay County Council to obtain money for the purchase.

•Received a monthly report for the prescription drug card program through the National Association of Counties. In March, 579 people saved $16,217.23 by using the discount card.[[In-content Ad]]
