Take action to prevent tragedies

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
Thanks Senator Donnelly and shame on Senator Coats. I really appreciate Senator Donnelly’s decision to back the checks on gun ownership and can hardly believe the lack of concern displayed by Senator Coats. Do we want another Newtown here in Portland? I think not, and I’m guessing that most Portland residents agree with me. Thanks for sharing my opinion. Hunters don’t need automatic weapons just as smokers don’t need a flamethrower to light their cigarettes. May good sense prevail before there is another tragedy.

Well-deserved
To the editor:
As an “adopted” son of Portland and Jay County (I was born and raised in Madison County), let me offer a well deserved congratulations to Jack Ronald in regards to his induction into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame. Portland and Jay County is fortunate to have, in my opinion, a first class newspaper. Thanks Jack for your effort and professionalism.

Prom thanks
To the editor:
The class of 2014 (Jay County High School) wish to thank everyone for the fantastic prom we had Saturday, April 20.
We want to thank our junior class sponsors Mrs. Reece and Mrs. Somers, the parent committee, the parents that helped us and hosted the evening, the staff, teachers, administrators that assisted and attended, as well as the business and community of Jay County for their donations and support.
Our prom was a success and a blast. We will keep the memories forever.
Junior class officers — Abigail Johnson (president), Amber Huelskamp (vice president), Abbi Dunlavy (secretary) and Brennen Krieg (treasurer)

Improvement
To the editor:
Since I wrote a complaint letter about a local store (printed April 19) I have noticed a great improvement within your business. Thank you. Keep up with the improvements.
Keeping Portland the best “Place to Grow.”
