Taking away our liberty

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
Has progress hurt our standard of living?
With things like electricity, cars and all the things that have developed from them, of course not.
Before any of this, we had a government system that did not stifle us and we were able to generate all the things we have today. Our system is the result of thousands of years of failures in government rule.
The kings, senates, committees or whatever, failed. We started with a government that was the result of those failures. Our Founding Fathers, who were the greatest of history’s knowledgeable men, got together and asked, “why?”
They decided that each citizens’ liberty was the most important goal. With the knowledge of the past and liberty as a goal, they produced the U.S. Constitution.
Today, Liberty has been changed to control and our government is working toward returning to thousands of years in the past.
Make two lists. One that shows all of the good things produced by liberty since 1900 and one that shows what good things the government has produced since 1900. The winner without doubt has been liberty.

Those thousands of years in the past were just experiments in kinds of controls — usually the means of production or having the farmers grow corn, not wheat, which always ends up creating a surplus or shortage.
Or the state gets involved in what we should use for our energy — solar, coal, or gas — and that ends the same way; we pay through taxes for someone else’s mistakes.
We make enough mistakes on our own. We really don’t need any help in that area. But the leaders, elite, government — whatever you want to call the tax-supported individuals — have always made decisions for the taxpayers. For a while, we had the solution to the control problem. That was the constitution, which we were told to “chain them down with the chains of the Constitution.”
Well, the chains have been broken, we don’t know history, we don’t know the constitution and the chain-breakers are in charge of our educational system, so why would we know how to chain them down or why?
All this type of control has been going on for those thousdands of years and all have failed. Can we be different.
“The control of the production of wealth is the control of human life.” — Hilaire Belloc
