Taking issue with parade editorial
Letters to the Editor
This letter is in response to the editorial on Monday, Oct. 12.
I sat here in disbelief about your editorial on the homecoming parade. You of all people should be proud to be included in such a great community. We as a whole come out to celebrate life in our town. This is traditional in our town. And so we as families come out in support of our kids.
And you have the nerve to complain about a little trash. That, after all, is why we the people of Portland pay taxes. We have some of the best people I know on the street department, as well as the equipment to handle a little trash cleanup.
Furthermore, I can remember when you were a younger man how you would talk about how great it was to see everybody having so much fun at the very same parades you are complaining about now.
As for throwing candy to the kids along the route: Kudos. We were all kids at one time in our life. So I say shame on you.

To the editor:
Today, credit unions around the world will join in celebrating International Credit Union Day and the role these financial institutions play in communities. After a year that has posed economic and financial challenges for people around the world, the theme "Your Money. Your Choice. Your Credit Union," honors credit unions' philosophy of putting people before profits in order to provide access to affordable financial services to all members.
Credit unions are unique because they are not-for-profit, democratically controlled, member-owned cooperatives. Members of credit unions pool their assets to provide low-cost loans and other financial services to each other. More than 185 million members served by credit unions in 97 countries have embraced the credit union movement's cooperative spirit. Credit unions play a vital role in the economic development and stability of the communities they serve, helping people improve their lives through access to affordable financial services.
The theme also celebrates the advantages of credit union membership. Value, trust and service are just some of the many benefits of being a credit union member. That's as true here in Indiana as it is in credit unions from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. A philosophy of customer services lies at the core of all credit unions, and it's an advantage that has distinguished them for more than 150 years.
This International Credit Union Day, we hope everyone will join us in celebrating the credit union difference, our cooperative heritage and the wonderful opportunities credit union membership will offer citizens of Jay County for many years to come.
Respectfully,
