Teacher grants awarded (8/22/05)

Foundation gives 'mini-grants' to local teachers

Mini grants totaling $3,450, which will fund 14 projects involving many local students, have been awarded, The Portland Foundation announced this morning.

As a way to increase funding for educational projects and programs, the foundation started the Teacher Creativity Mini-Grants Program last year. These grants are to help cover the costs — up to $250 — of learning experiences which teachers feel are important to their students, yet are outside the budget of their school.

This program is funded by the Thomas Educational Fund, a component fund of The Portland Foundation.

This program funds grants for field trips, classroom supplies, class projects, programs, music or art instruction, speakers, educational materials and seminars. The purpose is to allow teachers to become more creative in their teaching styles and methods, without being hindered by cost.

The Board of Directors of The Portland Foundation has approved grants ranging from $200 to $250 each for 14 projects for the second half of 2005. Grants were awarded to:

•Bloomfield Elementary School — Three $250 grants towards the purchase of Kid Pix Computer Drawing Software requested by Kathy Ayers, Sandy Colquhoun and Nancy Shawver.

•East Elementary School — $250 for Math Box materials for the second grade sought by Priscilla Keller; $250 to purchase books by Jim Aylesworth, in anticipation for the author's visit to the school, requested by Colquhoun.

•General Shanks Elementary School — $250 to sponsor a culture fair at the school sought by Jodi McKee; $250 to purchase pedometers for use in the physical education classes requested by Nancy Evans; $200 to build a one-quarter scale replica barn during Jay County Ag Week requested by McKee and Denise Swingley.

•Jay County Christian Academy — $250 towards the purchase of a digital camera, ink and photo paper sought by Kay Corle; $250 to purchase math manipulative materials for the first, second and third grade classrooms requested by Cindy Grile; $250 to purchase pond life computer CDs and a fish guidebook for the kindergarten classroom sought by Jerry Nichols; $250 to purchase materials to create a “bird sanctuary” for study by the fourth and fifth grade classrooms requested by Kristine Wolford.

•Judge Haynes Elementary School — $250 to purchase books by Jim Aylesworth, in anticipation for the author's visit to the school, sought by Shawver.

•Zion Early Learning Center — $250 for the purchase of sports equipment for the preschool program requested by Sharon Beeler and Chris Weaver.

“The foundation is proud to have inspired creativity in the classroom by removing the hindrance of cost for the teachers. We were able to fund 29 projects in 2005 totaling $7,170, and impacting the education of over 2,760 students,” foundation program officer Jackie Davis said.

The next teacher creativity mini-grant application deadline is Feb. 2, 2006.[[In-content Ad]]
