FORT RECOVERY — Trailing the first game of its volleyball match 7-3 and looking uncharacteristically sluggish on the court, the Fort Recovery volleyball team needed somebody to step up and rally the team.

The Indians got their spark — from the entire squad.

Fort Recovery made a comeback to win the first game over Delphos St. Johns 15-13, and outplayed the Blue Jays at the net while running away with a 15-6 victory in the second game. The win raises the Indians’ record to 10-3 on the year and 3-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

“For some reason my girls take a little bit of time to get ready on the court,” Indian coach Jackie Kaup said. “I told the girls that we’ve gone through the last couple games and we’ve played some tough games, and right now we’re trying to learn how to win.”

After quickly falling behind by four in the first game, the Indians fought back to tie the score at 11. Once Fort Recovery evened the contest, it didn’t allow St. Johns to get into any kind of rhythm on the court, and the Indians overmatched the Blue Jays for the rest of the night.

“We just weren’t ready to play. We had no blocking today, we had no net play,” Blue Jays head coach Ericka Wiesenberg said. “After having them come from behind to beat us, that really just kept our energy down, and I don’t think we came out ready to play that second game.”

The Indians rode the momentum of the first game right into the second, as they jumped out to a 10-3 advantage and never gave the Blue Jays much of a chance. St. Johns managed to string together two points to bring the score to 13-5, but the Indians responded quickly as Joscie Kaup nailed a kill that brought the score to 14-5 and swung the momentum right back in Fort Recovery’s favor.

Senior Liz Wiesenberg led St. Johns with nine kills and 10 digs, Meghan Metzner had eight assists and Edana Hoehn was 7-for-7 on her serves with one ace.

Wiesenberg was quick to single out sophomore middle hitter Elyse Grothouse for her team’s trouble at the net.

“She was not having a good day today,” the Blue Jays coach said. “She was getting blocked at the net so we couldn’t depend on her to get any kills. When one person fails we all kind of lose it.”

While Wiesenberg was singling-out players, Kaup was overjoyed at the play of her entire team.

“My hitters were phenomenal tonight, I don’t even know which one I could point out,” Kaup said, quickly listing nearly every player on the Indian roster. “They came out, stuck with it and kept pushing and pushing. And I have to give my defense credit. We’ve been improving and hopefully we’ll keep improving.”

Joscie Kaup made a difference for the Indians in just about every facet of the game. She notched five service points, 10 kills, 23 assists and six blocks.

But Kaup certainly didn’t do it alone, as her teammates provided more than enough help.

Jenn Stahl added five kills and eight blocks and Briget Metzger had 10 kills and a team-high nine blocks. Sophomore Jennalee Post led the team with nine service points.

“We came out and we just kept fighting and fighting,” Jackie Kaup said. “Tonight we kept saying, ‘Stay positive, keep pushing and things will go our way.’ ... It was an awesome game tonight.”

Next up for the Indians is a trip to the Crestview Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.

Junior varsity

The Fort Recovery junior varsity team continued its success with a 15-7, 9-15, 15-7 victory over St. Johns Thursday.

Roessner also had 10 digs, and Kristen Schwieterman came away with 13 digs and 19 points. Ciera Rammel finished with 25 assists, and Julie Link had nine kills.

Freshmen

Fort Recovery’s freshman volleyball team ran its record to 11-1 with a 15-3, 15-5 trouncing of Van Wert.

Holly Stein paced the team with six kills, and added four digs. Lauren Wenning scored eight points, and Sam Staugler and Alicia Schwieterman each added six.
