Teens in need of our help

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
I believe the Rev. Terry Jones of Gainesville, Fla., has the protection of the First Amendment, just as Muslims do to build a mosque near Ground Zero. However, I strongly disagree with what both of them want to do.
Though Leonard Pitts’ opinions are rarely mine, I agree the media should never have given Jones the attention.
But they’re all missing the point. Burning the Quran is not the answer to stopping the spread of Islam. Building a mosque near Ground Zero will only cut deeper feelings of hatred and bitterness.
And then, in the midst of it all, in our own town, headlines reveal a possible gang threat. I do not know what the authorities have learned since this trouble came up, but I do know that our young people need our help. In Portland, the drug usage and drug problems — including the meth labs — have reached a level never before dreamed.
More young people are drinking beer, taking drugs and involved with illicit sex and pornography than we will ever know.
Everything is getting out of control. I hear the youth have renamed our city, “Potland.” They come here from all over to the “purple lights” to pick up their Oxycontin. They come by the carload. These are very serious problems and our police need prayer and support. But we need to turn to our “higher power.”
Our young people see the lives of most adults and the hypocrisy and are rebelling against it. What is there for our youth to do in this county? What outlook do they have for jobs anywhere?
Once again, the last place teens want to go is church. Simply because most churches are so cold, dead, lifeless and full of cliques.
Our youth need to see they are important to our very existence. The church needs them; we want them in our services. Maybe they are the ones who can bring this great revival we so desperately need. They’ve turned to drugs, alcohol, illicit sex and pornography in search of power and acceptance. Sooner or later all these will become a dead-end street. And that is where our Savior will be standing.
Repent and turn away from the gangs, the drugs and the abominations. Get on fire for God.
If God cannot do something to help our youth through the so-called church in Jay County, then for heaven’s sake do something without it. If you teens have to by-pass the established church to get to God, do it. Maybe God will begin to move in the local taverns, in the theater, in the nightclubs. If God can’t move through our church boards, our church members and our pastors, then it’s time to meet at the local bar. And I will be the first preacher to walk in and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Order me a Diet Coke, please.
Sincerely,
Phill Jellison, pastor,

Sick and tired
To the editor:
You don’t know how close I came to not renewing my subscription.
I’m sick and tired of Leonard Pitts and the other left-wing “kooks” you seem to love and can’t get enough of their garbage.
Of course, I don’t have to read their opinions, nor do I have to read your editorials. The only reason I read them is to find out just how many “kooks” there are.
As for Obama, he’s an “Obamanation,” and a Muslim who hates this great country. Well, it was a great nation, but by the time Obama and his Mafia friends he has in his cabinet get done with it, it will not be so great. Our children and their children and grandchildren will be the ones to suffer.
My husband will be 95 Dec. 7, and I will be 85 in October. We will be married 65 years in February. My husband served his country. He was in the service when Pearl Harbor was hit and later on went in at Normandy and fought in four battles — one being the Battle of the Bulge. I lost a husband at Normandy and a brother in Korea. They fought for and gave their lives for their country so that Leonard Pitts and the other left-wing kooks can have the freedom to “shoot off their mouths.”
Also, three of our four children served their country, one doing two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot.
Of course, I can always cancel my subscription and ask for a refund, which I just might do in the future.
