Thank you for patience with JCPL
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
It was a moment I will not forget.
As I opened the back door to the Jay County Public Library three weeks ago my mind was focused on what I would be doing that week. My thoughts quickly shifted as I stepped into a small puddle of water just inside the building. I went further into the building and found a waterfall flowing out of the ceiling above our staff lounge area.
In a near panic I found other library staff members who had begun the task of moving computers and other items out of the standing water, which I discovered had spread from the back corner of the staff area to almost all areas of the building.
The bad news, as you know, was we had to close for two weeks to get dried out and put things in some semblance of order to begin providing services to the public. The good news is that we are now “open” again. As we wait for work on our walls to be complete we are now operating out of our Community Room and offering as much to the public as we can.
We have a lot of books and movies available for check out (including all of our new materials), and patrons have the ability to request specific titles. Our staff will retrieve them from the main part of the building. We now have three public computers available along with wireless access. We can run copies and faxes for patrons.
I know that many of you make JCPL a regular part of your daily and weekly routine. We are sorry that our library cannot be enjoyed like it once was. But, we have hope.
The restoration will be completed and full services will be brought back to you in the coming weeks.
During this time of crisis, my staff and I have appreciated the kind words and encouragement the residents of Jay County have provided. I am also appreciative of Phil Laux of Laux Plumbing and Heating, Ryan Hurt of All Circuit Electrical, Steve Stockton of Bixler Insurance, the City of Portland Water Department for their quick responses to our situation and the John Jay Center for making their computer lab available to our patrons.
We do miss seeing all of you, and we look forward to you coming back to JCPL.
