Thank you is well-deserved
Editorial
Call it a gesture of gratitude on behalf of the community.
Organizers of the Jay County Historical Society’s annual Heritage Fest couldn’t have selected a better theme than this year’s: Honoring the community’s firefighters.
These men and women devote countless hours in training and risk life and limb to protect their fellow citizens. And they do it with minimal compensation — one firefighter recalled the days when his department paid volunteers 44 cents for every run, no matter how long it took to fight a fire — and very little in the way of thanks.
That’s why it was so fitting to have each of the county’s departments recognized.
Individual members reminisced about battling big blazes. They talked about how much more sophisticated today’s training is when compared to 20 or 30 years ago. And they shared their pride in knowing they perform an invaluable service to the public.
The public, in turn, was able to show during this weekend’s rain-soaked festival how grateful we all are. Well done. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
