Thanks are given out for cultural event (02/23/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

On Friday (Feb. 17) we were able to hold a multi-cultural fair at General Shanks Elementary School.

In one afternoon more than 200 children were able to “travel” to Japan, India, Mexico and Germany. The children were able to sample foods and learn about the geography, languages and customs of those countries.

I would like to thank all of the presenters, who are all parents of students at General Shanks. Thank you to Annie McClung, Rafael Briones, Raj and Pratima Patel, and Miki Kimpara, Noriko Kawamura and Rika Kageyama. Thanks also to Eric Garringer from FCC who came to translate for the Japanese ladies. You all did a fantastic job.

I would also like to thank The Portland Foundation, FCC, Linsco Private Ledger and the General Shanks PTO for their financial contributions that made this possible, and to Tyson for donating the tortilla chips.

Finally, I would like to thank Agnes Howell for helping me to organize this. It’s great to be part of a community that does special things for its youth.

Sincerely,

Jodi McKee, teacher,

Make a difference

To the editor:

An article regarding East Central Indiana made headlines in the Muncie Star Press, Sunday, January 29 regarding confined feeding operations. A similar article appeared in The Anderson Herald Bulletin on January 30.

It would have been very informative to give Jay County the same information in The Commercial Review.

If you haven’t read it, Indiana ranks 11th in confined feeding operations. Since January 1, 2005, 21 applications have been filed with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. This eliminates the process of going through zoning and other county boards. Fifteen of the 21 applications came from Jay County.

Officials in Randolph County have decided not to adopt any local zoning ordinances to regulate CFOs, as reported in The Star Press.

Unless Jay County is already inundated with state applications, the zoning board can still make a difference.

Bad idea?

To the editor:

I have followed with interest a story making the rounds in the media. It seems the Bush administration has okayed a foreign business overseeing security in some of the busiest ports in the U.S. That's like having the fox guard the henhouse.
