Thanks for extra patrols

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor-

I would just like to take the time to thank the sheriff’s department for stepping up the patrolling of county roads 400 South and 200 South during the times when school kids are traveling to and from school.

I have seen him two days in a row — once next to my house on 400 South and today with an individual pulled over on 200 South.

As someone who has to travel these roads every single day hauling three or four of my "day care" children I am glad to see that help is on the way. Sometimes just the presence of an officer will slow these kids down but now they know you mean business.

Back when I was a senior we saw more than our share of accidents on these roads from Portland to Dunkirk, including one that took the life of one of our fellow students and her unborn baby. As a passenger, her life was gone and the driver was seriously injured due to that accident which involved several cars.

I know I am not the first to write a letter like this and certainly won’t be the last but if it can just help one kid to just realize that their car is not a toy nor were they given their license to show who can get to Dunkirk the fastest.

Please slow down and be safe and remember when you drive recklessly and irresponsibly it is not just your life that you put in danger. Heaven forbid that something tragic happen as the result of a choice you have made. It is something you need to be prepared to deal with for the rest of your life.
