Thanks for help at art auction (12/05/05)

Letters to the editor

To the editor:

One of the largest crowds in recent years attended the 23rd annual Hoiday Benefit Auction at Arts Place, where $13,801.50 was raised to help with our annual budget. Of that amount, $500 will be placed in the Ernie Loy Memorial Ticket Fund, which will be used to subsidize student tickets to our performances.

We were very pleased with the spirit and generosity of the bidders. The success of the auction was attibutable to many people, and some we would like to recognize are:

•The numerous businesses and individuals who donated sale items, door prizes and cash.

•The many volunteers who solicited the donations.

•Loy Realty & Auction, Gary Loy and staff for providing the auctioneering services.

•Brittany Wolfe, an Indianapolis Colts cheerleader from Winchester.

•Barb Freel and Lisa Barnett for preparing the delicious food; The First National Bank for sponsoring our reception; Tyson Mexican Original, Jay County Beverage, Monarch Beverage, Sharette’s Fudgery and Candies, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and The Glass Bonsai for the generous donations to the refreshments.

•B&S Excursions and MainSource Bank for their donation of a two-night stay at French Lick Springs Resort for our raffle.

•Delta Theta Tau Sorority for all of their help.

•Wine stewards Jim Burk and Paula Fifer.

•Greeters and helpers, Jim and Julie Forcum and Becky Hinkle.

•The staff of Arts Place.

•And most importantly, the wonderful crowd who attended this year’s auction. Please plan on attending next year and bringing a friend with you.

Sincerely,

Doug Loy, chairman

Barb Freel, food chair

Sue Burk, regional services director, and the staff of Arts Place

Bring them home

To the editor:

Today I was watching “Delta Force.” It reminded me of the Korean conflict, Vietnam, Desert Storm. Who knows where else? They have been nothing else but political.

We are going to spend $50 million or more, maybe billions, not to mention how many young men and women’s lives, before we are done. What did we accomplish in Korea?

We are still over there. We just horse around so long that now they have superpowers.

What did we get from Vietnam besides a lot of lost lives and a few bags of rice?

At the end of World War II our country showed the world how to end a war. We should do this again. We are one of the strongest countries in the world. It is getting to look like we are gutless.

Our country does not need to be in war all the time. If we want to spend all this money, we need these countries to learn to take care of their own people and keep them from depending on us.

We don’t need them. We need to take care of America and Americans. Bring our military home and God Bless America.

Hospice thanks

To the editor:

November is annually observed as National Hospice Month. I have recently had the privilege of personally meeting the dedicated professionals who serve the terminally ill.

In my new position in the marketing and development department of State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice, I am meeting nurses, aides, chaplains, social workers, bereavement specialists and other staff whose mission it is to reduce patient’s pain, manage difficult symptoms, comfort the patient and the family members on a daily basis.

Often they are called to a bedside in the middle of the night or on a weekend. These co-workers regularly report that their work brings them laughter and tears, friendships built and peaceful good-byes.

During Thanksgiving Week our marketing department presented special appreciation mementos in each of the three State of the Heart offices: Greenville and Coldwater, Ohio and Portland, Indiana. In observance of National Hospice Month, we honor these kind professionals who serve our hurting loved ones in their homes, in nursing homes, or in any setting the patient calls home.

In addition, I extend very special thanks to Ghyslain Chocolates in Union City, Indiana, and creative artists, Judi Shroyer and Tammy Fox, for making the staff appreciation gifts beautiful.

Sincerely,

Beverly Hughes,

Marketing Manager

Interesting

To the editor:

I find it interesting that the president now has decided to outline his plan for victory in Iraq. That's like explaining how the lock on the barn door works after the horse has gotten out.
