Thanks given for conservation efforts
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Thank you!
Recently Jay County fourth and fifth grade students experienced “conservation learning” opportunities at a local level.
The fifth grade students visited/learned about the benefits of wetlands with a visit to the Loblolly Marsh Wetland Preserve on May 24 and the fourth grade students learned the value of conservation on a local level at a “Conservation Field Day” on May 26th.
The Jay Soil & Water Conservation District has been organizing these two conservation field days since 2003 and due to economic circumstances, the field days were being threatened for 2011. Through the generosity of The Portland Foundation and the Portland Morning Optimist, once again, Jay County youth experienced the benefits of knowledgeable conservation experts.
Of course, in addition to The Portland Foundation and Portland Morning Optimists, a BIG thanks goes out to the experts who voluntarily shared their knowledge and expertise to include: DNR, Friends of the Limberlost, USDA/FSA, Purdue Extension Service, Upper Wabash Watershed Coordinator, Critter Control and local concerned conservationists. Without their willingness to share their knowledge, these events could not occur.
The youth hold our future; the aim of the Jay SWCD is to expose them to the necessary information to make good decisions.
