Thanks given for food bank help (11/14/2008)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Wow, what a treat. The 2008 Trick-or-Treat for the Food Bank was an overwhelming success thanks to the caring people of the Jayland area. Through your generous donations, the Helping Hand Food Bank received almost 900 greatly-needed items. It was amazing to see citizens of all ages working together to help their community.
This tradition of helping others is certainly something to be proud of.
I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to: Vicki Tague and the Jay County Chamber of Commerce; McDonald's of Portland; Dunn Family Dental Care; First Merchants Bank; Display Craft; CVS, Jay School Corporation; The Commercial Review; WPGW radio; Dave Hemmelgarn and Family; and the Hudson family.
Please continue to remember the needs of the Helping Hand Food Bank and give a "treat" whenever it is possible during this holiday season.

Honor?
To the editor:
My dad James Simos passed away Nov. 3, 2008.
Arrangement were made Nov. 4 with the Ridgeville American legion to perform color guard honors.
My dad was a proud veteran who served in the Korea Conflict, was Commander of the American Legion and always felt it was an honor to perform color guard honors at veterans' funerals.
I could go on about how wonderful and what a stand-up man my dad was, but anyone who knew him already knows.
So you might begin to understand the disbelief and heartbreak when the Ridgeville Color Guard left 5 minutes before we arrived at the grave site.
We were told they were tired of waiting.
I spoke with the Commander of the American Legion. He was not there at the cemetery, but he gave several reasons why the men left - including the fact the funeral ran late and that they had waited an hour at the cemetery.
These men, and I won't call them gentlemen because that would imply honor, did a very unjust service to a man who would have stood at their grave site until the honor a veteran deserved was performed.
There are no words or future action that the Ridgeville American Legion can ever give to correct their disgrace.
