Thanks given to 'angels' for their help (12/15/05)

Letter to the editor

To the editor:

My wife and I were doing our deliveries on Monday (Dec. 5) when our exhaust fell off — or so we thought. But it was just dragging on the ground so we thought we could finish what we had to do since we were out in the country and only had about 30 minutes to finish.

We turned onto 800 West when the tail pipe fell off so we thought that was the end of the dragging and our temporary problems, but it made the exhaust point out from behind the car which meant that it would dig into the ground every time we reversed (which we have to do quite often so we could not avoid that).

We both got out of the car and took turns trying to twist, pull and kick the exhaust off, but we finally admitted defeat and called my brother-in-law to come and help since had had tools for the job and we didn't (we have since bought some!).

Just then our angels appeared. Two men came to our rescue and one of them slid under the car and with a pocket knife and removed the exhaust.

It was three days later and it had started to snow heavily and made visibility difficult at best, and made the roads a guessing game. We were traveling along Ind. 26 on our last stretch of deliveries when the car hit a particularly slick spot (very ironic since a few weeks earlier I was reading Dear Abby to my wife about what a person does in a driving emergency). With a quick warning to me to hang on, my wife took her foot off the accelerator (and leaving it off the brake) and steered the car best she could so we might not hit anything if at all possible. When you have very little control, some is better than none. We went off the side of the road and down a small ditch.

Steadying her nerves before trying to reverse onto the persons driveway so we could keep on our way, an angel appeared. The young man got out of the car and without hesitation pushed the car while my wife reversed onto the drive.

To our three angels of mercy I offer a huge thanks and wish you all the very best.

Though this made me think, and it is easy to spot angels when they appear out of the blue to lend a hand, I would also like to thank a couple of angels for their support and help every day.

Without them there is no way my wife and I would have been able to manage (especially in the last 4 or 5 months) and sometimes everyday angels may feel they are not appreciated enough. I would like to thank my mother-in-law and her very amazing husband.
