Thanks to those who helped after fire (08/10/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

We would like to express our sincere gratitude and deep heartfelt thanks to the wonderful people who helped us during and after our house fire on Aug. 3 at 228 E. High St. in Redkey.

Our wonderful neighbor Nancy Steed, who saw the smoke and woke our puppies, who barked until they woke us. Nancy, thank you doesn't express how much we appreciate you waking our puppies and calling 911. Please know how grateful we are for you. You helped to save our lives.

Bear and Thunder, we love you. You wonderful creatures helped to save our lives, also. You will get a special treat every day.

Redkey Police Officer "Mikey." Thank you for being there with us. Your presence at the fire was needed and your caring and concern is deeply appreciated.

We are grateful to have you in Redkey to protect and serve.

Redkey Fire Department. You guys are the best. You all did a tremendous job with our fire. Thank you for putting the tarps down. You saved a lot of our things that otherwise would have been destroyed. We truly appreciate each and every one of you. You're an awesome bunch of people.

The American Red Cross. Joyce, Marvella, Tammy, Marci, Meridith, Julie and all of the other folks who complete the wonderfully, absolutely amazing organization that you area part of. Thank you for your help and hugs. We would have been lost without you all. The kindness and understand we received is immeasurable. Thank you all so much.

The Salvation Army of Jay County (Denise), thank you for your kindness and help.

Also, Asbury United Methodist Church, Pastor Randy Davis, the Rev. Joe Hines, Marsha (you know who you are), Jay County EMS, 911 dispatchers and Budget Inn (Portland).

Also thanks to Jennifer, Sara, mom and Robyn.

And above all these, we want to thank God for allowing our house to remain standing and that no one was hurt. We want to thank Him for the many blessings He has given us during our time of need.

Because of his mercy and grace we still have a home.

Amen.

What recovery?

To the editor:

Speaking on a weekend radio address, our President touted how well our economy is doing, and at various times various pundits on various news programs across the networks chastised the American people for not celebrating this wonderful economy.

They cannot understand why the polls do not show more confidence in this time of strong economic growth.

Although I have not participated in any poll, I must confess that I am one of those people to whom the pundits are speaking because I have not felt much economic growth.

Little of America's newfound economic growth has trickled down to me.

Our local school board (South Adams) has not reached a contract agreement with the teachers for four years because, in my opinion, of a lack of trust in the economic future.

While my salary has not grown, my bills have.

Medical costs continue to escalate, as insurance benefits slide.

The price at the gas pump has grown almost weekly, and buying groceries has become a financial dilemma.

The economy is doing so well that the Indiana State Teachers' Retirement Fund Annuity Savings Account Guaranteed Fund Rate dropped from 6 percent to 5.5 percent as of July 1, 2006.

I do not have confidence in our economy.

I realize that for a certain segment of America's population the economy is doing well. However, to quote Bob Dylan, "It ain't me, babe!"
