The American Way (9/17/05)
Letters to the Editor
By To the editor:-
(Editor’s note: The following is a poem dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina).
To the editor:
Great loss of human life and suffering was told
As the devastation of Hurricane Katrina did unfold.
Homes and cities were destroyed; families were torn apart.
Tears filled our eyes; pain filled our hearts.
Americans were shocked as they heard the news
About the widespread destruction in Alabama, Mississippi and Baton Rouge.
Our hearts were burdened as TV unveiled these dreadful scenes
Of human suffering and death, especially in New Orleans.
Our schools and churches throughout the USA
Dedicated moments of silence and we did pray
For our fellow Americans who fell victim to Katrina’s pathway.
We share your pain and suffering; that’s the American way.
Even though our government didn’t respond quickly in your hour of need,
Americans throughout the world united together indeed.
Through wondrous organizations such as the Salvation Army and the Red Cross,
Countless donations were sent to those suffering to prevent greater loss.
Did our government commit a grave sin?
Was this due to the color of a person’s skin?
Would have our President sent in troops over night
To rescue those in danger if their skin color were white?
Red, white and blue are our colors.
Within the boundaries of the U.S. there should be no others.
For all of us were created in the likeness of Him.
It shouldn’t matter the color of your skin.
Even though our government wasn’t there,
We want you to know that your fellow Americans do care.
Food, water and money were collected throughout each day
To aid those in need; that’s the American way.
Accountability lies from the mayor to our President,
‘Cause relief and help wasn’t quickly sent
To those in desperate need within a day.
Needless suffering occurred; that’s not the American way.
May our leaders of our country realize their mistakes and learn from the past.
Then, belief in our government may come at last.
The American spirit will never be quenched, nor go away.
We are survivors; that’s the American way.
If we can spend millions on a war in another country,
Should we not then spend millions fighting the war on poverty?
Every American should have the opportunity to work and play,
And live in harmony; that’s the American way.
This is the American way, for in God we trust.
He is our true Leader; the Guide of U.S.
We will not fail, for united we do stand
Regardless of the race of any child, woman or man.
Catastrophes happen and we know not why.
We just need to keep faith in the Maker of the sky.
For our victims and survivors of Katrina, we will constantly pray.
And praise our Lord God daily; that’s the American way.
What our fellow Americans went through was quite inhumane.
Even though their lives will never be the same,
They will look forward to the dawning of a brighter day.
And not succumb to defeat; that’s the American way.
Yes, we will mourn our great losses, but then
We need to recognize that our God will continue to bless our great nation.
We will need to overcome many obstacles with each passing day.
And start rebuilding our country; that’s the American way.
Even though your future as of now may appear quite dim,
Your future will become much brighter when you trust in Him.
And your fellow Americans will help you through this disaster from day to day.
We are a compassionate and generous people; that’s the American way.
May God bless you,
James Roberts
