Theft of school iPads probed

Suspects allegedly attempted to pawn tablet computers

Two Apple iPad tablet computers were recently stolen from Jay County High School.
A 17-year-old student allegedly walked out of the school with an iPad on two separate occasions, Nov. 27 and Nov. 28. The juvenile allegedly gave the iPads to two 18-year-olds to sell at Jay County Pawnbrokers, 940 N. Meridian St., Portland.
Juveniles are not allowed to pawn items.
Jay County police are sending paperwork on the case to the office of the Jay County Prosecutor on the two 18-year-old suspects, and to probation officers in regards to the 17-year-old suspect.
Police did not release names of the suspects.

JCHS Dean of Students Chad Dodd received an anonymous tip about the missing iPads and was able to match the serial number of the tablets at the pawn shop with school records.
The 17-year-old suspect allegedly carried the tablet computers out of a JCHS classroom on two different occasions.
Both iPads have been recovered.
Tim Long, superintendent of Jay Schools, said he was not allowed to comment on an ongoing investigation, but said that the school has policies in place to deal with thefts.
He also said that there’s almost always a digital trail left when school equipment is stolen. “It would be very unusual if we had something go missing (and not recovered),” he said.
The high school is currently working on a plan to provide an iPad to every student at JCHS.[[In-content Ad]]
