Theurer in council race (02/01/08)
Gary Theurer, a Madison Township resident who is closing out his third term as Jay County Commissioner of the South District, joined the race Thursday for an at-large seat on the Jay County Council.
And State Rep. Bill Davis, a Portland Republican who is finishing out his second two-year term in office, has also decided to run for another term.
Davis, whose 33rd district includes all of Jay and portions of Randolph and Delaware counties, defeated incumbent Ron Liggett four years ago, and once again beat Liggett in the general election in 2006.
Davis filed paperwork to make another run for the seat Thursday in Indianapolis.
Earlier this month, Andy Schemenaur Jr., an elementary school principal and rural Portland resident, filed to run for the Democratic nomination for the District 33 seat.
Theurer, a resident of 7163 South 700 East, Union City, is the first Democratic candidate for one of three at-large council seats.
Filing so far on the Republican side have been incumbent Marilyn Coleman, Jefferson Township trustee Jerry Monroe and Portland resident Dennis Mason Jr.
In the May 6 primary, voters will choose up to three nominees from each party to run in the Nov. 4 general/school board election.
Two current members of the Jay County Council - Democrat Gerald Kirby of Redkey and Republican Jim Zimmerman of rural Redkey - have entered to the race for the commissioners' seat Theurer has been widely expected to vacate.
Filing for major party candidates for the primary closes at noon on Friday, Feb. 22.
