FORT RECOVERY — They ran, and they ran. And then they ran some more.

The Division IV No. 3 Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays put on a ground-game clinic Friday night, racking up 278 yards rushing on the way to a 35-7 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians.

The Indians hit a brick wall of the St. John’s defense when it tried to get its running game going, rushing for just 29 net yards.

The only bright spot as the Indians fell to 0-6 was the passing game, which saw Toby Metzger complete 11-of-24 attempts for 121 yards.

The win improves St. John’s to 5-1.

St. John’s jumped out to an early lead when Nick Johnson hit Andrew DeWitt on a pass play good for 50 yards and a touchdown at 2:06 in the first quarter.

The onslaught accelerated in the second quarter as St. John’s put 28 more points on the scoreboard. First DeWitt broke away on a 48-yard touchdown run with 10:18 on the clock. Then he did the same thing from 43 yards out at 5:55 in the quarter. By the end of the night, he’d have a total of 132 net yards.

Not to be out-done, Johnson scored next on a 25-yard run at 2:42. And just to round things out with 40 seconds on the clock before the half, Brad Looser ran 17 yards for the quarter’s fourth TD. Jordan Rode hit all five of his extra-point tries.

Faced with a 35-0 deficit, the Indians got on the board in the third when Metzger hit Travis VanSkyock on a 14-yard pass play good for a touchdown. Jordan Staugler’s kick was good for the final margin.[[In-content Ad]]
