Thomas named runner of the week

Ian Thomas had a standout race to earn himself a conference award.
The 2005 Jay County High School graduate was voted Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference track Athlete of the Week for his effort leading the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track team March 28 at the Hanover College Track and Field Invitational.
Thomas easily won the 10,000-meter run, which is more than six miles, with his time of 32-minutes, 23.82 seconds. He was 21 seconds faster than his teammate Stephen Boedicker, and his team was the third fastest in the event in school history.
Ian's twin brother, Mitchell, was third in the event for the Engineers in 32:49.49.
Joseph Vormohr, a 2006 JCHS graduate, also competed at the meet hosted by his Panthers. He placed third in the discus with a toss of 135 feet, 7 inches.
Rose-Hulman placed second at the 11-team event, and Hanover was third.
Josh Shatto
Jay County - 2006
Pitched in a pair of wins for the IPFW men's baseball team.
Shatto started on the hill, tossing 2 1/3 innings as the Mastodons defeated Purdue 22-19. He was the closer Sunday, blanking Le Moyne for 2/3 of an inning to complete a 12-11 victory.
Le Moyne had strung together four runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the score at 11 before Shatto took to the mound. He walked one batter and had an intentional walk, but got a bases-loaded strikeout to end the threat.
IPFW went on to win on a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Shatto gave up four runs on two hits and four walks against Purdue. He struck out four batters and left the game with a 7-4 lead.
The junior is 2-0 on the year had has struck out 12 batters in 14 1/3 innings.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County - 2008
Was part of a winning relay March 28 as her Indiana Wesleyan women's track team hosted the Polar Bear Invitational.
Johnson joined teammates Cassidy Wagner, Kailee Whitaker and Lindsey Waggoner in winning the 4x800 relay in 9-minutes, 39.47 seconds. They were nearly 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up team from Indiana Tech.
The freshman also finished eighth in the 400 dash in 1:02.82.
Holly Stein
Fort Recovery - 2007
Picked up a win as her Defiance College women's track team also competed in the Polar Bear Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan.
Stein followed up her runner-up effort in the javelin a week earlier at home by winning the event at IWU.
Her throw of 114 feet was two feet better than Marta Tillett Indiana Wesleyan.
The sophomore added a sixth-place finish in the discus at 107 feet, 10 inches. She was ninth in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 6 inches.
Amber Edmundson
Jay County - 2008
Halted the Ancilla College softball team's 10-game losing streak with a big inning of relief in an 8-5 victory Thursday over Lake Michigan College.
Ancilla trailed 5-0 in the game, but rallied to take the lead on a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Edmundson did the rest, pitching a one-two-three seventh to earn the win.
The freshman also had a pair of hits in the opening game of a double-header against McHenry Community College March 24 at the Disney Wide World of Sports tournament in Orlando, Fla.
Jill Roughia
Jay County - 2005
Competed in three events for the Huntington University women's track team March 27 and 28 at the Virginia Military Academy-Washington & Lee Track and Field Carnival.
Roughia's best effort came with a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She posted a time of 12-minutes, 20.69 seconds.
The senior teamed with Anna Farmer, Krystal McHenry and Britley McConnell for seventh in the 4x800 relay in 11:22.79. She was also 14th out of 41 competitors in the 800 run at 2:26.42.
Josh Ludy

Reached base in half of his plate appearances Wednesday as he made his first start at catcher for the seventh-ranked Baylor University baseball team.
Ludy doubled as he finished 1-for-3. He also had a walk in the Bears' 14-1 trouncing of Prairie View A&M.[[In-content Ad]]
