Thoughts on immigration (05/04/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Of late, there has been much ballyhoo concerning immigrants, legal or illegal. Whatever your position happens to be on this topic, I think everyone should read what Theodore Roosevelt’s position was on this topic in 1907. The following presents Roosevelt’s ideas on immigrants and being an American in 1907:

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the persons becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

One should also take note of the following. Illegal aliens have no legal rights; they were not invited to sneak into this country. Persons who are protesting in certain cities in our nation want open borders for the hordes of Spanish-speaking people that are unable to build their own prosperous nation south of the border.

They are like fleas on a dog; they want a warm-blooded host for a free meal. Amnesty has failed in the past and will fail now. It will result in millions more coming who are criminal, sick, uneducated, hungry and welfare clients from Third World countries pouring across our border with Mexico.

Poor treatment

To the editor:

I am currently incarcerated here at the Jay County Jail, and have been for some time now. You would not believe how outrageous some of the things that go on here, but I am sure you have heard.

But this one has to be right at the top of the list. My cell block has been out toilet tissue for three days now. I mean none at all, and there are five of us in here. When we ask for it we are told there isn’t any for awhile. Told things like it isn’t my job and laughed at half the time and treated like it is some kind of a game.

Then once we can finally can’t hold it any longer we are forced to beg and plead for hours on end to get barely enough to wipe ourselves clean — sometimes having to rip our bedding sheets up or use newspaper.

This is in no way, shape or form right or even humane. We are not here for corporal punishment. We are here to take responsibility for our actions and pay our debt to society. It is bad enough we are fed barely enough to keep from starving. How poor is our county when they can’t even afford to give us tissue to use the restroom?

Thank yous

To the editor:

On Wednesday, April 12, Jay County Extension Homemakers had their annual achievement day. We were honored to have our IEHA President, Joyce Brewer from Wabash, join us and speak about her theme for the year: “Dream, Believe, Achieve.” What an inspiration for everyone in attendance. Also present was our district representative, Treena Smith from Yorktown (formerly from Jay County).

I would like to thank everyone that came that day. Also many thanks to Judy and Eldon Campbell. When I mentioned the theme was “Up, Up and Away,” Judy was somewhat skeptical. However, she went far beyond my expectations and words could never express my thank you enough.

Also, thanks to Lisa Price and Lisa Barnett from Tyson for their donation and Mary’s Salon DeVeyessa for their donation of prizes. I want to thank everyone else that helped in any way to make this once-a-year event successful. I want to say thank you to my church, Sugar Grove Nazarene, for letting us use the fellowship hall. We have been having achievement day at the 4-H Building, and it has always been cold and not the best of places to meet. Everyone was so grateful to have such a nice place to meet. We are already thinking about next year and looking for a theme.

Thank you,

Roberta R. Horn,

president, Jay County
